We Remember

STRASSER, Ernst Josef

April 27, 1937 — July 26, 2023

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Ernst Strasser (1937-2023) at the age of 86.

Ernst was born in Germany in 1937 to Michael and Anna Strasser (née Maurus). He and his siblings (Erich, Irmgard and Linde) grew up in the latter end of World War 2. There he met Allied Canadian soldiers who treated the family with kindness and respect. Perhaps in their honour, he chose to immigrate to Canada in 1958, at 21 years of age.

While a cheese maker by trade, Ernst found his future career in construction and drywall. He worked on hundreds of homes and buildings over the years. He was fond of driving around Kelowna, remembering the buildings, complexes, and homes he’d helped construct. This filled him with pride. He was still doing construction projects for family and friends well into his late 60s.

Ernst loved the outdoors and was an avid camper, hunter, and fisherman. Like all outdoors men, he was fond of tall tales about the ‘one that got away’. His fondest memories were of multi-week hunting trips shared with friends. His heart lives in the forests and mountains of BC.

Ernst is survived by his son Martin, Martin’s wife Cynthia, and his grandchildren Tianna and Markus.  In Germany, he is survived by his siblings Irmgard, Linde, and Erich as well as their families.  Ernst is loved and missed on two continents.

A Memorial Service will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, www.kghfoundation.com.
