It is with devastating sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of John Thys on December 25, 2023, while vacationing in Australia.
John was born in Sarnia on July 9th, 1962, but raised in Windsor, Ontario where he attended Roseland Elementary & W.D. Lowe Secondary before graduating from St Clair College as a Tool & Die Maker. He played football with Windsor’s AKO Fratmen in the early 80s and remained an active member for several years thereafter. He met the love of his life, Mitzi while attending Expo ’86 in Vancouver. They married in September 1989, and welcomed their daughters in 1994 and 1996. In September 1996, John moved his family to Kelowna, BC.
John was joyful, easy-going and friendly. He could tell endless stories which were elaborate and often with questionable details but always entertaining. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and neighbours; especially around the pool with a beer or rum & coke. He was always up for fun and loved to play golf, hockey, ski, scuba dive or spontaneously boogie to embarrass his daughters. John was a wonderful husband, father, friend and neighbour. He will be remembered and missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his wife Mitzi, daughters Natasha and Charlotte, sister Helen (Gord) Pierce, brother Anthony (Kirsten) Thys, nephews Andrew, Ryan, Joel, niece, Michelle and dogs Pippin and Ivy.
John was predeceased by his father Pieter in 1988 and mother, Sylvia (née Bron) in 2005.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.

So sorry to hear this
Sending my deepest condolences 💐
Mitzi, losing someone dear is incredibly difficult, especially when it happens unexpectedly. John is so very missed.
May Peace Be With You and your Daughters. .
I did not know John very long, but always enjoyed his stories and good nature. It was very sad to hear of his passing. I’m happy I got to play hockey with him and a ski day as well. Warmest condolences to his wife and family. It’s amazing what they have been doing to welcome strangers and friends into their home.
Sincerely,
Andrew Eagles
Mitzi,
I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of John. My boys went to school with your girls! We had many chats during those school days, and lots of laughs and memories from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and during run ins at the grocery store since. We send our deepest condolences to you and your daughters. May you rest in peace John!
Regards,
Cheryl, Brandon & Dustin Yule
Mitzi and girls, I’m not sure what to say, John left way too early. Mitzi, you told me a few cute stories about John and his antics, and he set up the Christmas tree at the office for you for quite a few years. Stories and memories…Donna
