We Remember

BARNES, Gertrude “Alix”

November 3, 1940 — October 16, 2025

It is with love and gratitude that we announce the passing of Gertrude “Alix” Barnes on October 16, 2025. Alix departed this world holding hands with her daughter, Sharon, and granddaughters, Baillie and Tasha – joined together in a circle of love.

Alix was the last of her generation, predeceased by her cherished sisters Rosemary, Gail, and her twin sister, Robin, as well as her beloved cousin Liz. Together, the four sisters and Liz shared a lifetime of laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion – a bond that time could never break. She also leaves behind her dear friend Margaret Pound, whose faithful weekly visits over the past decade – often helping Alix connect with Sharon through video calls – filled her days with companionship, support, and joy.

A woman of deep compassion, Alix lived her life in service to others. A dedicated nurse, she found purpose in caring for those who needed comfort, strength, and understanding. Nursing was never simply a profession for her – it was a reflection of her nature: gentle, kind, steadfast, and always ready to lend a hand. Through her work, her friendships, and her family, she embodied the belief that caring for others is one of life’s greatest callings.

From early on, Alix’s life was fueled by adventure. The day after graduating from nursing school in Vancouver, BC, in 1963, she and her two best friends boarded a ship bound for Hawaii to begin their careers. She went on to build a life filled with warmth, wisdom, and compassion, caring for patients in Hawaii, Colorado, California, and Arizona before returning home to Vancouver. There, she devoted the last 25 years of her career to healthcare management, focusing on long-term care and enriching the lives of countless individuals and families.

Her love of exploring the world never faded. Alix travelled joyfully with family and friends – cruising Alaska and Panama, visiting parts of Europe, and exploring the beauty of both the United States and Canada. After retiring, she indulged her wanderlust with epic adventures to India, Israel, Egypt, and China. One especially treasured journey was her trip to China with her twin sister Robin and their daughters, a memory held close by all who shared it.

Alix’s heart was open to the world and to the people in it. Whether golfing with Robin at the Quilchena Golf & Country Club in Vancouver or spending winters as a snowbird in Phoenix, AZ, she embraced life with courage, curiosity, and joy. She taught those around her that wonder can be found in the grandest journeys and the smallest moments alike.

Her greatest gift was love – offered generously, quietly, and without limit. It lives on in every life she touched and every kindness she shared.

Alix will be deeply missed, warmly remembered, and forever loved.
