We Remember

CALHOUN, Alvia “Al”

November 24, 1926 — December 8, 2018

Alvia Odborne Calhoun passed away suddenly but peacefully at the age of 92. Al is survived by his wife and best friend Renia and their five children: Al (Lena), Dale (Wendy), Janice (Barry), David (Tara-Lee), Donna (Chris), 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and his beloved sister Ruth Nowasad.

Al was a respected and honorable man whose passions were his family and square dance calling.  Al served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a military police officer and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his service in the Korean War. Al and Renia enjoyed a wonderful life together; travelling the world throughout their square dance career.  He was a respected and gifted square caller and he and Renia truly enjoyed their 50 years of whirling, twirling and teaching square dancing.

A special thank you to all the staff and management of Sun Pointe Village for their exceptional care and compassion.  At Al’s request, there will be no service. The family will meet in North Vancouver in the coming months to lay Al’s ashes to rest next to his father. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, www.heartandstroke.ca.

Al is fondly remembered The Gateway Gliders North Bay Ontario. We danced to his calling many time. His strong clear voice and knowledge made it fun. Al and Renia were great to have call and it was a great pleasure to host them over night. He will be missed by all of his many North Bay friends.
