We Remember

CARON, Alfred B.

Alf passed away peacefully on April 4th, 2016 at the age of 77 after a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Judy, son Tim of Lake Country, daughters Janine Potter (George) of Red Deer, and Jackie Lardeur (Dean) of Calgary, grand-daughters Nicole, Madeline, Jessica, Alexandra and Kaitlyn, sister Cathy Pashniak, and brother Joe Caron.

Born in Calgary in 1938, Alf loved to reminisce about the people and places he loved there, especially his first job with The Albertan newspaper where he delivered papers starting at the age of 12. He later worked for Douglas Equipment, and then Flint Engineering as a Field Supervisor. Alf met Judy while based in Red Deer and they married in 1962. They moved frequently in the early years for work: Red Deer to Fort St. John to Valleyview before settling back in Red Deer to raise a family. Alf worked hard as a young dad and became an accountant, articling with McKenzie Sheridan. In 1968, he and Judy moved to Kelowna where he completed his training with Rutherford Bassett before being hired as head of the business office at Kelowna General Hospital. He stayed at KGH until his retirement in 1993.

Never one to sit still, Alf took on many hobbies, starting with buying a small orchard in 1977. Fruit sales and bee-keeping soon followed. He loved to be outside working in the orchard or yard and enjoyed camping, fishing, and cross country skiing. After retirement, Alf and a family friend successfully took on the project of developing adjoining properties into a subdivision of new homes. Sports and the stock market were other passions of his, and he could frequently be found watching the Business News Network, or sports on TV: hockey (Chicago Blackhawks), baseball (Toronto Bluejays) and football (Calgary Stampeders) were his favourites. Alf and Judy enjoyed travelling, and over the years travelled extensively around the world, exploring new places together or with their friends.

Alf was an active community member, joining the Rutland Kinsmen Club, and later the K-40 Club where he made many great friends. He had an avid interest in old cars and joined the Vintage Car Club of Canada where he acted as Treasurer and later Director, expanding his circle of friends.

Above all, Alf loved his family. Time spent with his kids and grandchildren was always precious, especially when everyone could all be together.
