We Remember

EIGL, Renate (nee Schmidtke)

March 15, 1927 — August 11, 2018

In loving memory of Renate Eigl who passed away peacefully in Kelowna General Hospital on Saturday, August 11, 2018. She is now rejoicing in Heaven with her loved ones that went before her.

Survived by her children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson: Herbert and his son Jeremy (Atitaya) Eigl, and their son Jordan, Klaus (Laura) and their children Kent (Brandy) and Kara, Charles (Patricia), Harold and Dorothy (John) Cowan and their children Ian, Veronica, Charles, Andrew and Lindsay. Also survived by her siblings: Alfred (Alice) Schmidtke, Hanna Karpinsky, Werner (Agatha) Schmidtke, Helga Berg and sister-in-law Agnes Schmidtke along with many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Josef; parents Eduard and Amanda Schmidtke; brothers Josef, Willi and Guenther; sister Ursula and daughter-in-law Nancy; brothers-in-law Ernst Karpinsky and Ferd Berg.

Renate was born in East Prussia, Germany and emigrated to Canada with her husband, Joe and two eldest children in 1953 to join her parents and siblings who had emigrated the previous year. The crossing by ship from Germany in December was arduous with an infant and toddler, but like everything, she made the best of it and looked in faith toward the future. After settling and living in Lethbridge where her three other children were born, the family moved to Creston, BC. After many years in Creston, where the family were successful orchardists, Renate moved to Kelowna with Joe where he could be provided with better medical care.

Renate was energetic and knew the value of hard work. Not only was she devoted to her family and ran a busy household, but she helped work in the orchard, operated a fruit stand and worked as a home care aid. Along with Joe, she was instrumental in establishing the Creston Baptist Church and volunteered for many years in the church and its ministry to the community and later at the KGH Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store. She was an affectionate, encouraging and generous grandmother, always making time for her grandchildren and ready to praise their accomplishments. She enjoyed family gatherings and when the family was a gathered around the dinner table with a good meal, she was at her happiest. There was always a special torte for a birthday celebration and Sunday afternoon Kaffee and Kuchen was seldom missed.
