We Remember

GRAHAM, John Malcolm

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

John passed away peacefully at Hospice House in Kelowna on Monday, January 4, 2016. Survived by his loving wife, Olga, of 58 years; two sons: Alex M. (Jean), John T. (Alencia); eight grandchildren: Heather, Bob, Sandi, Stephen, Michael, Nakeisha, Alencia (Audrey), Jamison; two great grandchildren: Alanna and Zachary; also survived by numerous other cherished family members and close friends.

John was born in Picton, ON and as a young boy, with his brother Sandy, worked hard and diligently on their family farm. He joined the RCMP in 1952 and after a successful career, he retired in 1983.  Following retirement he commenced his second career with the City of Surrey.  Throughout his retirement years, until he lost his battle with cancer, he was actively involved with the RCMP vets, Legion and the Mission Lion’s Club.  In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, wood carving, genealogy, RVing, bridge, fishing, skiing and reading historical novels.

John was the recipient of a Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977 and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 in recognition of his service to our country and communities. In spite of active involvement in police work and community activities, John remained a dedicated, devoted dad and husband.  He cherished time spent with Alex and J.T.  On the morning of January 4th he opened his eyes one last time and peacefully took a final breath with Olga at his side.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the nurses and care staff at Kelowna Cancer Clinic and Hospice House for their devoted, compassionate care. Special thanks to Dr. Prestage, Dr. Bachand and family doctor Willie Mackle for their expertise and quality care as John’s life was extended by many years!

A celebration on John’s life will be held on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. • John Broughton says:

    Dear Olga:
What a shock to learn that John has passed away. Since we have been out of touch I was not aware that he was in Hospice House and am so sorry that I did not get to visit him. I remember the good times we all had playing slow-pitch at the Mission Sports Field several years ago. We all respected John and his ability to play the game without getting too excited about whether we won or lost. I enjoyed the company of both of you. Please accept the most sincere condolences of my wife, Joellen and me.

  • Barbara England ONeil says:

John will always be in our hearts . Barbara, Jean and Kathryn England and families

  • Jorge & Teresa Silva says:

Our sincere condolences to the Graham family. We have had the privilege of knowing John Jr. & Alex. Both spoke highly of their father, and both are well respected and well liked men, which shows a great upbringing by John Sr. and Mrs. Olga Graham.
God bless your family in this time of loss and may He give you all the strength during this difficult time in your life.

    Sincerely,

    Jorge & Teresa Silva

  • Lee Keane says:

  • Bruce Duncan says:

Sincere condolences to the entire Graham family. I worked with John at Surrey Detachment and knew him as a Regular Member as well as a Municipal Manager. He was a wonderful man, with a quick wit, gruff exterior but with a heart of gold. He was a great mentor to me and the epitome of a leader. I hope that the memories of good times will help you through this difficult time.

  • Marie and Sandy Fraser says:

Sorry to hear of John’s death. Sandy enjoyed working with John, and always felt they made a great team in PG! Our condolences to all your family
