My heart goes out to Tim’s family and and friends. I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of watching Tim work with the kids at the local zone races. His enthusiasm was infectious, and it was obvious that the kids loved him. His wonderful influence will always be with those kids, and that is one part of the legacy that he leaves, even at such a young age.

  • Scott Edgerton says:

Although I’ve only known Tim for a year he left a lasting impact on me as I’m sure many others can say the same. He coached some of the US Telemark team @ Whistler July of 2012 as well as this past July just a short month ago. Although he was not a telemark skier his skills at Alpine racing carried over to Telemark & he rose to the challenge and helped all of us that were fortunate enough to attend the camps w/thoughtful & beneficial advice. I was lucky enough to have had a chance to stay with Tim for a few days this past March when Silver Star held the Canadian National Telemark Championships and had a chance to see Tim in a different light then role of coach and saw a side of him that many may have not known existed. He for all his oddities & quirks was one of the brightest & aware individuals that I’ve ever met & his ability to read personalities was one of his greatest assets regarding ski coaching. He was a great asset for our ski camp @ Whistler as he knew all the other coaches & was quite assertive regarding getting the absolute best treatment for all of us attending the camp. His passion for coaching is unlike any I have experienced and it became obvious how much he loved it from the first day I was around Tim. He kept things entertaining to say the least with his ski boot “Spurs” and vintage mid sixties “Downhill Racer” motorola walkie talkie (see attached photo) but always there to lend a hand and give a kind word of advice to his racers. I know I will miss Tim and his zest for life more then words can describe as will all those that had the privledge of knowing him. I wish the Harder family much strength, love & compassion during this difficult time!

  • Francesca 'Checka' van Soest says:

I can’t imagine who I would be today if it wasn’t for you! So, I thought I would write a list of things you taught me when you were my ski coach. You taught me how to: love chocolate covered coffee beans, how to embrace my inner princess and how to let it make me stronger rather than weaker, how to go balls-to-the-wall, how to punch, how to use a lasso, how to pick up boys (valuable for a 12 year old girl at the time!), how to love Led Zepplin (and the rocking ’80’s movies to with them), that no kid ever gets left behind no matter how slow they are on skis, how to play screwdriver and chicken, never to jump off a building because of consequences (you used yourself as an example), endurance because a little rain in Fernie never really hurt anyone!, to get up after the worst falls to race again, impeccable timing (you would show up miraculously once a week at my place right at dinner time), how teflon on my skis at the start really makes you fly down the ramp, and most importantly, how to laugh, really laugh, from the belly. You influenced me growing up and you helped make me who I am today. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have more than half my ski equipment in various shades of pink, I wouldn’t be addicted to coffee and therefore probably would’ve grown taller, I wouldn’t have the resolve to make half the tough decisions I’ve made, I wouldn’t have tried to turn my life into a musical, and I wouldn’t be half as compassionate or understanding. I am super proud to have been a member of your Princess Squads. You were more than a coach could have ever been, you were family to me, and I wish I could hit first chair on a powder day with you again. You were an amazing guy and it’s easy to see how many other ski racers, paddlers, and friends feel the same deep loss. You are already greatly missed. I would give anything to get another big fluffy patched down jacket hug from you. I wish I could have you as a friend for the rest of my life. I love you Tim…rest in peace.

We were very sad and shocked to hear this news today. I first noticed Tim in the start tent many years ago as he, with enthusiasm and caring words sent his racers out the start gate. He has impacted many young racers and his loss will be felt far and wide. Our sincere condolences to the entire Harder family. You have sadly lost an admirable young man.

    To the Harder Family

There is a lot of sadness around our home this week. Tim coached our boys in the Vernon ski club for over 4 years . He also was our Coach while I was president at the Revelstoke Ski Club and provided many great memories for the athletes in our club he coached . Tim was also Margaret’s and my friend. Tim was a great team builder in our club. He truly inspired all and supported them to do their best as an athlete. He was what you want in a coach , making each athlete perform to his best abilities and making them feel great. He was full of inspiration for our athletes and full of shenanigans as you probably know . The entire ski community knew his spurs ,his colorful ways and his dedication to his athletes. We hired Tim in 2012 with some pretty stringent demands and his head Coach (and Tim’s past youth coach ( Ned)) insisted on a good work ethic which Tim provided never being late. Tim was just calling our boys last week, years after coaching them as a friend wanting to go white-water kayaking and kiteboarding with them. He made friends with all his athletes and I don’t think I have ever seen him forget to encourage his old athletes. He will be missed by all. I would be proud to have a son that inspired so many young people to try their best. On behalf of my Family and the entire Revelstoke Ski club our condolences and hopefully tears will subside and memories will prevail .

Our deepest sympathies. We haven’t seen Tim for many years but enjoyed our time with him while he was coaching for Team Panorama very, very much. Tim and his ski buddy/fellow coach, Craig, instilled a lifelong love of skiing in our two boys, Rhys and Kyle, for which they and we will always be grateful. His humor, endless energy and knowledge made him a wonderful teacher. He was also very effective Head Coach, as difficult a job as that was.We were lucky to have him, and the world is a dimmer place without him.

My daughter Meg and I had the privilege to go to the BC Winter Games with Tim. We will always remember him for his encouragement, patience, energy and outstanding commitment. He loved the kids and always referred to them as “his kids”! He took all those kids under his wings and had a permanent smile on his face the entire time. He was very proud of them and just shared in the moment. I remember the long waits the kids had, sometimes as long as four hours. Tim always had a plan! He was the only one taking his team out to throw a football around or play a game. Everyone loved him and I as a parent thought we had the best coach and representation in the Games! Tim will be greatly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family. It is a very sad day to all of us, but he will be remembered always. We were very lucky to have known him. • Tommy Baggio says:

    Dear Harder family,

We met Tim on vacation in Banff around 2002 when we were visiting from England. My daughter Jayme, then only 11, was spotted by Tim as a ski racer and from that moment a bond was struck, not just with Jayme but with my son Max, my wife Rona and of course myself. That chance meeting was to change our lives, especially for Jayme who was captivated by Tim’s infectious sense of fun and adventure. Another vacation followed a year later in Panorama, during which Tim and his friend Craig gave Jayme and Max the best skiing experience of their young lives. A plan was hatched for Tim to come to France to ski with us in La Plagne. Tim’s arrival in France was spectacular – he made an instant hit with virtually the whole resort and became friends with everyone we knew and plenty others.

Jayme went on to ski for the GB children, junior and senior team. Max still skis for the GB junior team and if you watch some of the magical videos we have of Tim with our kids, in Panorama, you can see where they got their passion to have fun on the mountain.

This last week has been very tough, knowing that one of the most special people we ever met has left us, way too soon. We are very privileged to have known Tim and to have shared such fantastic times with him. To the whole family we are thinking of you and would love to make contact one day, if you feel able. You should feel proud to have had someone so unique in your family – not one in a million, one in a billion.

    • Joyce and Jim Harder says:

Hello to the Baggio family. We were so pleased to see your names on the list this morning. We had tried to call a number that we found in his drawer on the weekend, but not successful in contacting you. We know that Tim had a very special relationship with Jayme and Max , and with both of you. Thank you for always encouraging him, and for making him feel that he was a part of your family. We loved that kid so much, and he knew it, that is our comfort at present. Please tell Jayme and Max how much you love them, and give them a big “patched up fluffy down jacket” hug from our Timmer!!

      • jayme Baggio says:

Hi James and Joyce. I am so sorry I tried to call you back afterwards as I realised it could have been someone from Tim but the number came up unknown. I would so love to speak to you if you could try calling again, if you would like to, I would love that. Its been a huge and terrible shock for me and the whole family. I loved Tim to bits from the first day I met him, just like everyone else did. He was so, so special and has made the biggest impact anyone ever has in my life. I was shy before I spent time with Tim and he tought me to laugh at myself and be confident in being different. Not to care what other people thought and to have fun! Tim was the only person who ever had messier hair than me and he made sure we rocked it! The most gorgeous and fun loving guy and someone who will never leave me. We watched some home videos of us all together this weekend and couldn’t stop laughing! Tim was the life and soul. We had a good cry too, but we are so lucky to have had that much fun with him. If you would like to see them we would be really happy to send you copies. I wish I had one more phone call to tell him how special he was to me and I hope he knew that. Thank you so much for replying to us. It means a hell of a lot. Those puffy down jacket hugs were the best, there will never be better. Love Jayme

  • Vernon Johnston says:

    Dear Harder family,

Our family has been involved in the world of ski racing for many years with Big White. As our children progressed through the racing program they all got to know Tim. Tim was a remarkable coach who had the ability to bring together not only the racers on his team but he truly energized and often entertained all the clubs at the start area. The start area for kinder races will never quite be the same without Tim. Tim was a passionate young man who’s high energy spilled over to anyone around him. Having served on many race committee’s over the years I can vividly recall Tim insuring that all his racers whether they were in the first seed or the last received his full attention and sense of humour! He was truly a remarkable young man…our needs more people like Tim. Our deepest condolences to your family and we hope that you find support in knowing that Tim absolutely lived life to the fullest. From Vern, Teresa, Kayla and Ian Johnston. Big White

    Dear Joyce and Family,
Every once in a while someone comes into your life who touches you profoundly. Joyce, you were one of those people for our family. I’ll always remember your reminder to “Talk to our son.” We are thankful we took your advice. Again, a little window into your wisdom came through your daughter Erika. I had the good fortune to work with her a few years ago. What a kind, bright and respectful soul she is. I remember her telling me about a ski trip she had done with her brother, Tim. Although we had never met, in reading all of the stories about your son, he sounds like an amazing fellow. These accounts provide yet another reminder to enjoy life and love those around you…not only because of your enormous loss … but in the way your son lived his life and touched the lives of those he was with.

Dear Auntie Joyce, Uncle Jim, Graham, Erika, and Robin,
It is with great sadness that I heard about Tim’s passing. I am still shocked. I am glad you have each other through this time. I can’t even imagine this loss. I keep thinking of all the summers and all us kids playing together at the lake. You are all in my thoughts and my heart,
    Love,
    Miss Blenya

  • Anne-Marie Turski says:

    Dear Dr Joyce
You helped me and my husband enormously when our baby was diagnosed with HLHS. Tommy died 9 hours after birth. We just learned of Tim’s death today and we are so very sad for you and your entire family. You will forever be a person who made an unforgettable positive impact in our lives. As we read through these past condolences, it is obvious your son Tim also made an immeasurable impact on others’ lives. He was a precious soul, cut from the same cloth as you. Our prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family as you grieve the enormity of your loss. Love to you and yours, Dr Joyce.
    Sincerely,
    Anne-Marie and Dave Gaudet
