We Remember

MCCLUSKEY, Janet Marie (née Gendreau)

December 19, 1917 — May 5, 2019

Janet went to be with the Lord on May 5, 2019 at the age of 101.  She is survived by her sons John (Diane) of Hope, BC and Bob (Jackie) of Timmins, ON, two grandchildren Susan and Bill, 3 great grandchildren Kyle, Kelsie and Jessie and one sister Florence Marshal of Bishop, CA.  She was sadly predeceased by nine brothers and sisters.

My mom was born December 19, 1917 in St Thomas of Aquinas a small country village on the far outskirts of Montreal. Janet was the middle child of 11, and Janet’s mother Laura needed help to raise the younger children, so Janet’s dedication was to her siblings instead of her books.  A shy young woman growing up, did not know many people socially and lived a very quiet and religious life.

When Janet was 16 her parents bought a restaurant in Montreal and she and her family worked there. Janet had two sons John and Bob. My mom at age 62 decided she would like to learn how to drive so she took a driver’s education course and we bought her a car and she fell in absolute love with driving. One day she heard a radio announcement about a beautiful city in BC called Kelowna. She listened as the man described how beautiful it was with its flourish of orchards, vineyards, mountains and water. At that moment she decided that once day she would live there. True to herself at age 66 she packed up her car and drove alone with no GPS and no cell phone, from Timmins, ON to Kelowna, BC.

Here she spent a lot of years volunteering at KGH, the courthouse and several social groups. My mom became a real people person and enjoyed befriending as many people as possible later in life. Her great love besides family was dancing which she passed on to me.

On May 5th at 11:00 am my mom and I were listening to Angel by Sarah McLachlan and suddenly she opened her eyes wide open and stared at me as I held her hand and a couple of minutes later, she left me.  God blessed me with the honour of walking with her in her final steps of life here on earth to the gates of heaven that she then entered alone. I will miss her forever.
