We Remember

MCGREEVY, Jack

July 25, 1931 — September 26, 2016

Passed away on September 26, 2016 at the age of 85. Survived by his sons John (Liana) of North Vancouver, Gord (Candace) of Kelowna; grandchildren Olivia, Jackson and sister Yvonne (Rick) Wiley of North Vancouver.  Predeceased by his loving wife Dorothy and his older brother Bill. Jack was born July 25, 1931 in Winnipeg, MB where he was raised and educated. As a young man, he played both hockey and golf, his 2 biggest interests that lasted his lifetime and created many lasting friendships along the way. He met and married his wife Dorothy in Winnipeg in 1956 and soon after they started their family. While living in Winnipeg Jack’s professional career was with Midwest Detroit Diesel; he was transferred to Thunder Bay in 1959 and later to Regina in 1973, where he retired as Vice President of the company. Shortly after he retired from working in 1991, Jack and Dorothy moved to Kelowna, where they happily lived out the remainder of their years. Jack was very social, friendly and generous, making numerous friends easily…which led to him acquiring his nickname, “Friendly”…he made countless great friends throughout his lifetime, some of whom he was even able to convince to follow in retirement to Kelowna. The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the staff at Fernbrae Manor, Kelowna General Hospital, and Hospice House. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Springfield Funeral Home Family Centre, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. Condolences

  • Brian Currie says:

I am very thankful for the home away from home Friendly provided over many years while enjoying the great friendships of his sons Gord and John. Countless rounds of golf and limitless laughter always followed by one of The Dorths’ delicious meals served with her smile like a ray of sunshine are unforgettable. Friendly told me after working in the orchards as a teenager one summer his goal was to retire in Kelowna. After achieving this years later he said he felt like patting himself on the back every morning he got up for that decision. Let me pat you on the back today Friendly for countless good decisions you made on behalf of others. With your passing the world seems a little less hospitable a certainly less organized. Thanks Friendly..Brian(Bonzo)

  • Gordon Hoffman says:

Gord and Candace, my sincere condolences on this sad news. I must say that I was privileged to have met Jack. He was genuine and I picked up on that immediately after meeting him. I didn’t know his nickname was Friendly, but I can see why. My thoughts are with you. Gord Hoffman

We are friends of Jack from golfing times at Wascana Golf Club, Regina in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Later, Bill also enjoyed seniors curling with Jack in Kelowna. Indeed, Jack was always a pleasant and very friendly man. He made a difference with people and in relationships. Our sincere condolences are extended to his family. -Bill and Louise Mann, Kelowna
