We Remember

TOMPKINS, Maureen June (nee Zelley)

Maureen June Tompkins (nee Zelley) was born in Leicester, England and moved to Nanaimo, British Columbia with her parents in 1954. She graduated from Nanaimo Senior High School and later Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Education Degree.  Maureen was a passionate and dedicated teacher who taught for many years in both Vernon and New Westminster.  She later went on to work for several years as an Adjunct Professor at UBCO in Kelowna.

Maureen will always be remembered for her optimistic outlook on life, her great sense of humour, and her love of travel. She had many interests and enjoyed nature and the outdoors, especially working in her garden where she spent countless hours.  Maureen was devoted to her family and she will be deeply and sadly missed.  She leaves behind her loving husband Vern of nearly 55 years, her son Jim, daughter Janice (Peter and kids), sister Sandra (Bob), brother Brian (Dorothy), grandsons James and Eddie and her wonderful nieces and nephews.

  • Daphene & Lloyd Tompkins says:

    Vern, Janice & Jim

Lloyd and I were so sorry to hear about your loss. We so enjoyed all of our visits together, both out there and back here in New Brunswick. She so loved her family and enjoyed life to the fullest. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time.

    Deepest sympathy,
    Daphene & Lloyd

  • Brian Zelley says:

An river of tears, teardrop by lonely teardrop, can never wash away the loss, sorrow and pain of your departure, but we can remember beyond tomorrow. We can look back to those years in North London änd rember visits to Hämstead Heath park, or those train rides to Southend to wade in tge ocean or visit the arcade, to eat that pink candy floss or a candy apple, or the time you won a paint set at Battersy fun fair. Or the boat ridefro Southhampton to Quebec and the fun train ride across Canada with interesting stops at places like Medicine Hat to Vancouver where a ferry ride to Nanaimo and beyond.

  • Tracie, Darwin, Hudson & Kiana says:

Our deepest sympathy to Vern and his family. Though former neighbours but away from Kelowna much of the year, we didn’t know Maureen and Vern as well as we would have liked, but always enjoyed seeing them. Maureen was obviously a very special lady, dedicated to her family, who battled her illness with such strength and grace. We shall miss her.
