  • Marty Giles says:

    Dear Assam family

When I heard of Norm passing I couldn’t believe it. I actually had to sit down in my office and it didn’t sink in for a minute. Norm was a larger than life personality and one of my heroes actually. I am not exaggerating this one bit. When I was thinking about going out on my own and getting in business for myself I phoned him for some advice. I was scared and in only the way Norm could he put me at ease. He got my back on an ex employee issue one time who was wrongfully going against our business which I will never forget. I had been wrestling with it for 6 months and he took care of it in 48 hours.

My most fond memory of him was being on a Ford trip one time and we were all complaining about the car business and our manufacturer and our employees and the government and and and. He just sat listening and waited for lull in the conversation. He then leaned forward and held “court” only the way Norm could and said this.

“listen we are sitting in a restaurant where only a small percentage of people can stay drinking $8.00 drinks, smoking cigars and just came off playing one of the nicest golf courses in the world. If you don’t like the business sell your joint and go pump gas. The car business is the greatest business in the world and we are lucky to be in it.”

All 8 of us sat there for a minute and didn’t say a word but everyone nodded their head as he nicely told us to dry up. The rest of the evening and trip was better for all of us. For me that narrative stuck with me. I still whine every now and then about this or that but lots of times that speech gets pulled out of the hard drive in my brain and I watch it again and it stops my sniveling immediatley. He will be missed I know but I will never forget him.

    Deepest sympathy

    Marty Giles

We knew Norm and Cyndi as townhome neighbors in Kelowna before they moved to Summerland. Although infrequent, we will miss these enjoyable times together. Our sincere condolences to Cyndi, her daughters and Norm’s family who we unfortunately never had the privilege of meeting. God bless you all in these difficult times.

True leaders like Norm are few, yet his values shall surely be carried on and well cared for by Dan and his family. Thanks Norm. With sympathy: Ken and Cheryl Hiles

  • ken zender says:

As a new Ford Dealer I was invited to join a Coffee group which eventually became the Baltac Ford Dealer Group. The center of the group was Norm Assam. The joining of this group and getting to know Norm has been the biggest reason for the success I have achieved as a Ford Dealer. In addition when my oldest son, Shayne declared he wanted to work in the dealership I really didn’t know what to do. I mentioned it at a Baltac meeting and Norm said, Send him to me. Shayne moved to Kelowna, worked in Norms dealership, learned so much and today he is a very successful manager in our dealership. Norm had so some common sense that he taught us younger dealers. One meeting we were sitting around complaining about Ford and the economy and Norm Said, Boys Last year I made $X and this year I probably will make 3/4 of $X, and you know my life style wont change one bit. Norm was my mentor and I thank him every day for his wisdom and his knowledge.
