We Remember

NEUFELD, Elsie

July 11, 1930 — November 16, 2014

Elsie Neufeld, born July 11, 1930 in Winnipeg MB., the third child of Philip and Sophie Flatt, went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on the evening of November 16, 2014 at the age of 84.  She passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in the Kelowna General Hospital with many family members at her side.  Predeceased by her husband Alfred, sister Olga Shier and brother Jack Flatt.  Survived by four children: Ron (Rhonda), Sandy (Wayne), Norm (Gwen), Sharie (Brian); grandchildren: Marla (Jason), Christopher (Dianna), Joel (Tania), Jared (Ariana), Becky (Caleb), Daniel (Maria), Adrienne, David (Andrea), Steve, Sara (Ben), Meghan, Chantelle and Justin and seven really great great grandchildren.  Also survived by sisters-in-law: Mary Flatt, Helene Neufeld, Theresa Neufeld and Molly Neufeld and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elsie lived most of her life in Winnipeg, attending M.B.C.I. high school where she met Al Neufeld.  After a short courtship, they married in June of 1950.  Church life has always been very important to Mom; she and Dad were a part of the beginnings of the Elmwood M.B. Church.  Elsie was a faithful and committed wife to Al and a caring mother to her four children.

In 1991, Mom and Dad retired in Kelowna and had many great years in the valley.  She was a very practical woman in the way she approached life.   Mom loved to sew:  we could never begin to measure the miles of thread that have passed through her hands.  Currently there are over forty baby jackets piled up in her sewing room ready for completion to be sent for relief work in Africa.  She has volunteered her time and skills in many ways and places from her home Church, Trinity Baptist to Cottonwoods Care Center.  Even at 84, she was blessed with a sharp mind and active body, enjoying time with her grandchildren, traveling, baking, taking aerobics classes and socializing with her many friends.

When Elsie was 82, she bought an iPad and began using email, “surfing the net and even playing online games with distant friends and relatives.  The loss of Al in 2007 obviously changed her life, but through a deep and always growing faith she took life on with zeal and joy.  By her bedside she kept a daily pledge that included the following: “This is your day, Lord. I want to live in a way that brings honour to you…

Though Elsie endured a chronic condition, she lived life to the hilt.  Just before traveling to Winnipeg for her eldest grandson’s wedding, a fatal infection set in and her body couldn’t fight back.  She slipped into a coma on the morning of November 15 and in spite of many efforts by the hospital staff to help Mom recover, she peacefully breathed her last on the evening of November 16.  The family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Carver and the ICU staff at K.G.H. for their excellent care.

Condolences

  • Corrinne Reid says:

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the members of the Parkinson Senior Society we would like to express our most sincere condolences to Elsie’s family. She was an active participant here at the Centre and her presence will be sadly missed by all of those that were fellow fitness class members. Her smile and gentleness were endearing to all. May she rest in peace.

  • Lil Koop says:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family – all of who are loved by us! Your mom, grandma, great-grandma was a lady who loved her family fiercely, prayed for you all and was an example to all of us of a godly woman. My (Lil’s) favorite memory of Elsie, was her “dancing up a storm” at Sara and Ben’s wedding two years ago! That was great to see and showed what a zest for life she had. She is now united with her beloved Al and her Heavenly Father. May that comfort you all. Blessings on all of you.
    Irv and Lil Koop
