We Remember

MUSHTA, Peter

May 6, 1930 — February 6, 2024

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Peter Anthony Mushta on February 6, 2024, in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 93, with his family by his side.

Peter was born north of Lundbreck, Alberta to parents Emma and Anton. He grew up on the Tyrell Ranch with his sister, Mabel, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. In 1956, Peter moved to Kelowna, BC and had three children, Colleen, Larry and Tom, with his first wife Helen. He worked for Haug Building Supply for many years until he transitioned to Western Star Trucks for the final years of his career. He met his life partner Ellie in his early 40s, and they enjoyed many years together until her passing in June 2022. At that time, Peter moved to Mission Creek Landing, where he lived out his final years playing bingo and telling stories to his neighbours and the staff.

Peter was an avid horseman and enjoyed participating in Cutting Horse Competitions with his first horse King Pep, subsequently he enjoyed long trail rides up until his 80th birthday with his second horse Doc. He was an active lifetime member of the USCC Doukhobor community and continued to hold a strong commitment to his faith even into his final moments of life.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, sister Mabel, partner Ellie, and all twenty-one cousins. He will be greatly missed by his children Colleen (Mike), Larry (Jane), Tom (Louise); and grandchildren Dallas, Justine (Brent), Christine, Anthony, Hannah, Peter, and Haley; and two great-grandchildren Leighton and Linden.

The family would like to extend our greatest gratitude to all the staff at Mission Creek Landing and Dr. Zwardon; as well as Kelowna General Hospital, in particular the Emergency Department, 4B, and the Hospitalist group (Dr. Loken, Dr. McLellan and Dr. Naude), who made the final days before his passing as peaceful as possible.

A Graveside Ceremony celebrating Peter’s life in his hometown of Lundbreck, Alberta will be held with family and friends later this spring.
