We Remember

BERTHELSEN, Margaret Murray

October 17, 1933 — July 20, 2025

It is with great sadness that the family of Margaret Berthelsen announce her passing on July 20, 2025, with her children at her side. Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her children, Richard (Jean-Marc), Susan, and Peter (Sarah). Her beloved husband of 59 years, Jack (Jorgen) Arthur Berthelsen predeceased her in 2019. Margaret’s memory will also be cherished by her five granddaughters, Kaylee, Kristin, Megan, Lindsey, and Erin Margaret; and by her brother, Robert McNish (Betty), as well as her brother-in-law Mike Berthelsen (Margaret) and sister-in-law, Dorothy Hamilton (Don); and their families. Following the war years, she was happy to meet and become close to her half sister Gertrude (Trudy) Spencer and children in the UK, which completed her family.

Margaret was born on October 17, 1933, in Medicine Hat, Alberta to her parents, Robert and Isabella McNish. She lived in many places in Alberta and BC and, after marrying, created homes for her family in Calgary, Edson, Edmonton, Calgary (again) and finally Kelowna, in retirement. Our mother was loved by, and equally loved, a large circle of friends, along with her precious family in Canada, Scotland, England, and the Berthelsen and Bonke families in Denmark. Always ready with a warm smile that lit up her face and those around her, she had a kind and happy outlook. She enjoyed hosting gatherings, and her home was always open to family and friends, and in support of Jack’s work as well as the activities of their children. Family and family occasions were the centre of her life.

The family wish to thank the staff of 6W at Kelowna General Hospital for the excellent care our mother received in her last days. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Margaret may be made to the KGH Foundation or a charity of your choice.

A Memorial Celebration of Margaret’s life will be held in West Kelowna on Friday, August 15 at 19 Okanagan Grill and Bar- Summer Room- 3509 Carrington Rd, West Kelowna, BC, V4T 2E6 @ 1:30pm. Condolences

  • Lone Folmer Berthelsen says:

Dear Margareth, thank you for being you.
You and Jack were the first I met from our wonderful Canadian family. It was back in 1988, when we had dinner at Niels and Girly’s. We also had lunch at the Danish club in Calgary, where you introduced me to a Bloody Mary with clams!
Later, we met in Denmark, where you and Jack attended a family reunion with the Danish side of the family, and you sang along joyfully to the song “Jylland mellem tvende have.”

In 2012, we as a family visited Canada, and you and Jack invited us for lunch at your golf club (the photo). Luckily we met several times in Canada in the years after.
You and my mother shared a special bond. You called each other “blood cousins.” I’m sure she is ready to welcome you. ❤️

Thank you for your smile and warmth. Say hello to Mom Birthe.
A final hug from me, Lone🇩🇰😘

  • Lynn Rollins says:

It was my privilege to know Margaret. As an employee of the Calgary Stampede and member of the Medical Services team, of which Jack supervised, I attended many functions at their family home in Calgary. Margaret was always so welcoming, kind, and with such a tremendous smile made each and everyone of us feel so special. Thank you for the pleasure of knowing such a lovely lady.

  • Judith McMurtry says:

Dear Berthelsen family: Sadly I read about Marg’s death. Please accept our family condolences from Calgary with love. The memories are many and usually involved, hockey and food. Laughter and generosity of time and kindness were in such large supply. We miss Jack and now we miss Marg. Two of the nicest people ever. Their legacy of a splendid family is apparent and they parented beautifully. Love to you all and it was an honor to be included in their friendship circle. With affection, Judy, Kelly and Mike
