We Remember
LARGE, Philip Lindy
May 13, 1937 — November 16, 2025
It is with great love and sadness that we announce the loss of Philip Lindy Large, who passed away peacefully at the age of 88.
Left to hold him dear to their hearts are his wife, Doreen; children David, Michael, Jackie, Jennifer, and Teri; and grandchildren Christopher, Alexandrea (Missy), Brenden, Quinn, Zander, Keagan, and Nate; and brothers Brian, Denis and John. He now goes to join those who passed before him, including his parents Jack and Goldie; sisters Jacqueline and Judy; brother Bob; and granddaughter Lola.
Phil was born and raised in Kelowna and part of a “large” and lively family of seven children. Ambitious and hardworking from a young age, he graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Civil Engineering degree and went on to become the youngest District Engineer for the Department of Highways in all of British Columbia.
Phil later purchased Serwa Bulldozing Co. from his father-in-law, Jack Serwa, and in 1967 he founded DMJ Construction. They built subdivision roads, demolished buildings, and – through Jen-Ter Enterprises, established in 1982 – took on major crushing projects. Phil always said he was fortunate to have such hardworking, skilled, and loyal employees, and he credited much of his success to them.
Although he worked incredibly hard, Phil also understood the importance of enjoying life. He married his high school sweetheart, Doreen Serwa, in 1960, and together they raised five children and celebrated 65 years of marriage. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, (fun) uncle, and a kind and supportive grandfather. He was generous and a strong provider who made a lasting difference in the lives of many.
He loved sports, spontaneous road trips in the motorhome, fishing, boating and taking the kids waterskiing and tubing at the lake property. He always enjoyed a friendly game of crib – for a toonie of course – as it was a constant source of connection and comfort in his life. Friends and family always came first. His children grew up knowing they could accomplish anything they set their minds to – because he believed in them without limits.
Hawaii became a second home and a favourite winter escape. Everyone who knew him could tell you his lucky number was 13 and that his favourite colour was green. He sure was proud of his Irish Heritage, and he actually did have the luck of the Irish!
Vibrant and full of life through his first five decades, Phil later faced the challenges of bipolar disorder with courage, supported with love and devotion by his family. He then led a quieter life at home, but always enjoyed the company of family and close friends.
Phil’s kind, easygoing nature and positive outlook on life will be deeply missed. He will live forever in our hearts.
At his request, no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honour him by doing a kind act for someone else.

Phil always had the kindest greeting when I would show up at the Large family home to see David. I will miss seeing his great smile.
