Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Alvina Martin (née Schindel) on February 6, 2026, at the age of 99.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Walter, in 1984 and by her second husband, Dennis, in 1999; her parents Louis and Barbara Rathgeber; brothers Victor, Ernest, Walter, Edward, and Alvin; sisters Florence and Violet; and sons-in-law Keith and Brian.
She is survived by her daughters Jean, Shirley, and Gloria (Brian); sister Gladys (Dave); brother Norman (June); 7 grandchildren: Jamie (Angie), Cory, Shawn (Nicole), Bob, Chad (Ashley), Teri (Jay), and Lindsay (Jeff); 6 great-grandchildren Lexi, Trai, Nevaeh, Hannah, Avory, and Emma. She is also survived by 3 stepchildren David, Heather, and Kelly (Marsha); 2 step granddaughters Sydney and Christy (Daniel); numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
Alvina was born on September 16, 1926, in Fenwood, Saskatchewan. She married Walter on November 11, 1945, and they moved their family to BC in August of 1960.
That year she started working at the brand new Capri Hotel in the Vintage Dining Room and thereafter the Capri Coffee Shop where she became a very familiar face to many loyal customers. She retired after 25 years and was honoured for her service.
Alvina enjoyed baking, crocheting, entertaining, and playing cards with her many friends. She was very committed to her volunteer work at Evangel Church and was a familiar face at Care & Share every Thursday.
As per Alvina’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
We wish to express our gratitude to Alvina’s caregivers at Village at Mill Creek.
