We Remember

DION, Marguerite Marie Marthe (Margo)

February 24, 1936 — March 4, 2026

It is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing of Marguerite (Margo) Marie Marthe Dion. She will spend eternity with her Lord and Saviour. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Denis (Debbie) Dion, Claudine (George) Heiss, and Pierre Dion; her grandchildren, Everett Dion, Jyssica Heiss, and Gabrielle Heiss; and her great-granddaughter, Evalynn. She now joins her husband, Claude Dion and her siblings, Francoise, Raymond, Roger, Aurele, and Réal.

Her life was defined by her bubbly personality, her outgoing spirit, and her love for her family and God. She was the grounding force in her family, holding everything together in both good times and bad. She was famous for her infectious laughter, which has been passed down to all her children. Margo was a card shark (loved Bridge and Hearts), a master knitter, and an incredible chef, with her apple pies being legendary.

Margo was an exceptional woman, born in Notre Dame Du Nord, QC. As a young girl, she loved figure skating on the lake behind their house. She started her adult life as a housekeeper, but she wanted more and applied for a nursing apprenticeship with the nuns at the Ville Marie Hospital, where she became a fully certified Gardes-Malades (Nurse). She continued working in Quebec until Claude asked her to move to Vancouver, so he could continue his studies and where he had already found her a job. They were married and lived there until they moved to Rutland in the 1960s.

Once in Rutland, she and Claude were involved in Dion’s Grocery Store, eventually taking it over from Claude’s parents. Dion’s became synonymous with compassionate, hardworking, and strong family values, while still assisting those in the community who needed support. Whether it was groceries available via home delivery or on credit, Dion’s supported the community. They settled in the small community of Joe Rich, where they raised their family and were the driving force of development in the area. Their farm is still lovingly maintained by their son, Pierre.

Margo has become a legend of perseverance, stability, humour, and love.

Thank you, Mum, for being an extraordinary example of what an independent, driven, and compassionate woman should be. We are already missing you, but know you are whooping Grandpa’s ass in Hearts up there.

Sorry for your loss. My first job at 16 was for Claude and Margo and Senior Dions. Margo was always such a happy person and had such a hearty laugh. Thinking of her family today and know you will really miss her. Enjoy your memories.

  • Lisa Hazzard says:

I have so many stories and the fondest of memories of the years we lived in Kelowna. I met Margo in 1989 when I worked at Grandview Care Home. We had no family in the west so Margo “adopted” us. She brought gifts and celebrated when both of my children were born. She taught me to ski by perching me on the “bunny hill” at Big White before I knew how to stop, haha! We enjoyed so many of her her amazing meals around her table on the farm. After moving to New Brunswick she continued her faithful friendship with phone calls. I’d say hello and just hear that beautiful laugh which would instantly lift my spirit.
Her light shines brightly even now and her steadfast faith through joys and sorrows will continue to be a blessing in my life. 💖 Lisa Hazzard

  • Vincent Kapler says:

To Claudine, Denis and Pierre…Your family was always the kindest to my family. You gave us kids a so many memories that I still remember fondly. A quick story…as a much younger man I was playing at the lodge at Kananaskis. Margo had the idea to drive my parents all the way from Kelowna to see me perform. It was the one and only time my parents saw a return on my piano lessons. It is something I have always been grateful for. I too worked at Dion’s grocery one summer. There are too many good memories to list them all. I found this photo recently when cleaning out one of our barns…I’m not sure who it is (apologies for the quality)…maybe Pierre, but it is how we spent many weekends thanks to the kindness of both Margo and Claude. Both of your parents were amazing people who will be missed.
    Kind Regards,
    Vincent Kapler
