We Remember

McCREA, Alice Helene

October 25, 1927 — March 8, 2026

Surrounded by the grace of God, Alice Helene McCrea was called home to her Heavenly Father on March 8, 2026, at Mission Creek Landing in Kelowna, BC, at the blessed age of 98. Born on October 25, 1927, in Prud’Homme, Saskatchewan (a feast day she surely carried with joy), Alice entered this world as the 10th of 14 children born to the late Alfred and Marie (née Hudon) McCrea: Lawrence, Yvonne, Gilbert, Emile “Eddy”, Raymond, Maurice, Florence, Laurier, Thérèse, Alice, Marcel, Armand, Leon, and Annette.

From her earliest years, Alice’s heart was oriented toward God and neighbour. In 1945, she answered a profound calling and entered religious life with the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, a vocation she embraced with devotion for 40 faithful years. In the spirit of St. Francis, Sister Alice gave herself fully to service, prayer, and the works of mercy.

When her season in religious life drew to a close in 1985, Alice’s calling to serve did not diminish; it simply took a new form. She went on to work as a midwife, a practical nurse, and a long-term care aide, bringing comfort and compassion to the most vulnerable at the thresholds of life. She later opened her own daycare, nurturing the very youngest souls with the same tender love. Alice had a particular gift with children; her face would simply light up in their presence, as though she saw in each little one the face of Christ.

Alice lived her faith not only in word but in deed. When her hands were not in service to others, they were busy creating; she crocheted and knitted with great delight, gifting handmade snowflakes by the dozens, each one a small act of love.

She was a woman of warmth and playfulness, always ready for a round of cards or a lively game of bingo.

Alice was predeceased by all of her beloved siblings and is now reunited with them in eternal life. She leaves behind an earthly life of faith and service. She also leaves laughter in the hearts of her many cherished nieces and nephews.

Alice will be laid to rest in her home province of Saskatchewan, returning at last to the land where her remarkable journey began. May her soul rest in the peace of Christ, whom she served so faithfully throughout her 98 years.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.
