We Remember

SAUNDERS, Shirley Marguerite

September 9, 1935 — March 25, 2026

Shirley will be remembered by her children Cheri, Shannon (Doug), Julie (Greg), and Travis (Nikki) Saunders; her grandchildren Catlyn, Cassidy, Chelsea, Joshua, Mattaya, Willow, Cassidy, and Devin; her loving siblings Hugh, Yevonne, Marguerite, Gail, Mary Anne, and Daniel; and her cherished friend Judi Folk. Her spirit has gone to be with the Lord, reunited with her parents, Howard and Marie Baxter, and her sister Bernice. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her kindness, her strength, and the joy she brought to those around her.

Whether cheering on the Saskatchewan Roughriders, sharing a laugh over a game of ping pong, carving down the slopes as an avid skier, or finding peace in the mountains she loved, she lived life fully and with heart. In her twenties, she spent a year hitchhiking across Europe with her dear friend Judi Folk, where they also worked as nurses in Austria and Switzerland—an adventure that reflected her independence, curiosity, and love of life. A talented painter, she expressed her creativity in ways that will continue to be cherished. From her early days teaching in a one-room school in Loon Lake to the many lives she touched along the way, her impact was lasting and meaningful.

A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 1:00 pm, at The Oyama Community Club, 15710 Oyama Rd, Lake Country, BC. In honour of her vibrant spirit, guests are encouraged to wear bright colours – as this will be a celebration of her life.

In lieu of flowers in recognition of her love of animals, donations may be made in her memory to Freedom’s Gate Equine Rescue or The Happy Herd Farm Sanctuary.

Her memory will live on in all who knew and loved her.

Condolences

  • Steve Mitchell says:

The older we get, it seems, the less we can say we know about anything in life. Except for one thing; and it’s a thing that becomes crystal clear the moment when we have to say goodbye to them: our mothers lived to see us thrive, and thrived on giving us what we needed to live our best lives.
To Cheri, Shannon, Julie & Travis—please accept our most heartfelt condolences…
    Love,
    Steve and Leslie Mitchell
