We Remember

MITTELSTAEDT, Kurt

May 11, 1932 — October 27, 2026

Kurt Eugene Mittelstaedt was born to Alfons and Martha Mittelstaedt on May 11, 1932, in the city of Lodz, Poland. He passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026, and entered his eternal rest.

World War II upended Kurt’s family life in 1939. His father and older brothers were conscripted into the German army, leaving his mother to care for him and his three sisters under extremely difficult conditions. Forced to join the German youth organization of the era in the middle of the war, he was separated from his family. After the war, he was left to fend for himself and travelled from southern to northern Germany to an address in Bremen; his father had told the family to memorize it in case they became separated. During this time, Kurt committed his life to Christ and was baptized in December 1949. Eventually, over time, the family was reunited one by one. His father was finally released from a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp in 1950.

Kurt’s father urged him to emigrate to North America so that Kurt could later sponsor the rest of the family. An opportunity arose through his close friend Erich Blum, whose relatives in Saskatchewan needed farmhands. They arrived in October 1951. There, Kurt met Martha, the love of his life. They married in Vancouver, BC, on August 22, 1953, and were blessed with eight children between 1954 and 1965.

Kurt and Martha lived in Vancouver, where Kurt excelled as a carpenter and served as a supervisor on projects including the BC Hydro building and the Iron Workers bridge. Feeling called to ministry, he attended evening Bible school. Beginning in 1961, they served churches in Leduc, Alberta; London, Ontario; Vernon, BC; Kitchener, Ontario; and Kelowna, BC. In 1989, they briefly moved back to Vancouver so Martha could help care for her aging parents. Later that year, they returned to Kitchener and lived there until their retirement in 1996. They then moved back to Kelowna, where they lived out the rest of their lives.

During his ministry, Kurt continued to use his carpentry and construction skills, engaging in church construction and renovation projects, development projects at the Bethel Park Camp in Ontario, the building up of Vernon Bethany Home, and many other projects even into his retirement years.

Kurt was predeceased by his wife, Martha, with whom he had been married for almost 70 years, on March 14, 2023. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Herbert, Erna, Leo, Ingrid, and Gisela; his grandchild, Dawn; and his great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Grayson.

He leaves behind to mourn his passing eight children and their spouses–Rainer (Elizabeth), Leonard (Marilyn), Anita (Terry), Walter (Patty), Helga (Harry), Herb (Deena), Paul (Claudia), and Marty (Margit); twenty-six grandchildren and their partners; fifty-four great-grandchildren; other extended family members; and many friends.

The family is especially grateful to the staff at Spring Valley Care Home for the care they provided to their dad in his final year.

Kurt will be remembered for his service to God as a faithful pastor and handyman; as a faithful husband to Martha and an exemplary father and provider for his family; for his willingness to help his children with home renovations and for his practical wisdom; for his multifaceted volunteer work in the church; and for his loyalty and support for many friends.
