He was born in the Netherlands and moved to Canada at the age of 21.  He was an eternal adventurer who travelled extensively across countries and from valley lows to mountain tops.  His skills and interests were vast but he is most remembered as a geologist, prospector, artist and co-owner of the Yukon Motel.  He was a lover of birds and nature, a musician and the life of the party but most importantly he will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, opa and friend.  He will be deeply missed.

Survived by his loving wife Ida, daughter Leona (Jeremy), grandchild Jacob, sisters Bertha (Johan), Margret (Henk); brother Theo (Ann), sister-in-law Tiny, numerous nieces, nephews and extensive family in Ontario and the Netherlands. Predeceased by his father Rinze Altenburg, his mother Tjitske Van Der Galien and brother Piet.  A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. Charles Garnier Parish, 3645 Benvoulin Road, Kelowna, BC with Father Pat Monette officiating. Condolences

  • Ann Altenburg says:

Ahhh…Koosje. When I first met you, I was working as a secretary in a mining company. I even put your pay cheque into the bank whilst you were busy looking for gold. You had just returned from “the bush” and you did bring back “gold” in the shape of one handsome Dutchman, your brother Theo, who is the love of my life.

Both you and Ida made me feel at home straight away, letting me sleepover now and again and feeding me with delicious meatballs, chicken the Dutch way, great coffee and cookies. I was made to feel so very welcome. Your welcoming love and kusjes have been there throughout the years for our family.

As we aged, you and I became jokesters. One of my favourite comments to you was “Good job you aren’t married to me”. Your response was usually a loud raspberry.

I hear there is a goldmine in the sky waiting just for you. You will be missed greatly by our family.

Rest in Peace dear brother. May God bless you and keep you safe in his arms forever.

Van harte gecondoleerd met het overleiden van oom Koos. We hebben elkaar niet erg goed gekend, maar in verhaalvorm bereikte wel het een en ander Amsterdam.

Wishing you all the strength you need.

    Liefs,

    Henk, Isabella, Ingrid en Mirjam
