We Remember
ALLEN, Michael Stanley
April 25, 1946 — June 8, 2025
Michael Stanley Allen, a beloved husband, father, and champion of trees, passed away on June 8th, 2025, after a long battle with Parkinson’s. Michael was left to life’s next adventure in the loving embrace of his wife, Susan Edna Allen. He is also survived and remembered fondly by his son James, grandson Felix, and daughter-in-law Sarah.
Michael was born on April 25, 1946, in Harrow, England, and moved to Canada when he was eight years old. Since then, he’s lived in Ontario (where he met his lovely wife), Alberta (where he had his son), Manitoba (where he grew his family and career), and Kelowna (where he met his grandson).
Mike had a lifelong passion for trees and was often known as “Dr. Tree.” There isn’t much that Mike didn’t know about trees, particularly those in the prairies. Mike was a former City Forester for Winnipeg, a consultant, an academic, and an author. Indeed, Winnipeg boasts the largest stand of healthy American Elms in North America because of his programs of inoculation and eradicating pockets of the disease. Mike also wrote a weekly article in the Winnipeg Free Press, was on the radio on a bi-weekly radio program, and frequently gave sound bites to news programs on tree issues.
Mike loved travel and had many adventures all over the world. Mike lived in Nigeria for several years doing international development, he judged cities all over North America and Europe as a part of the Communities in Bloom program, and he went on numerous cruises and trips with his wife and family.
Mike’s life was a life well-lived, and he is fondly remembered for his quiet strength and kindness. Above all accomplishments and interests, he was a family man – there for the people he loved and those who loved him. We will miss him, but will remember him fondly with love.
A celebration of Mike’s life will take place at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 13, 2025, at Regency Summerwood Retirement Resort, 1360 K.L.O. Road, Kelowna, BC.
