We Remember
BERNATH, Margaret Rose
May 19, 1941 — March 5, 2026
Margaret Rose Bernath (née West) was born May 19, 1941, and passed March 5, 2026, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s.
Margaret was born in the small hamlet of Clemenceau, Saskatchewan. As a young girl, the family moved to Dawson Creek, BC. As the oldest of 6 children, Margaret was a huge help to her family. She learned at a young age how to cook and help with her younger siblings. Her family also ran a boarding house, life was seldom boring.
Life changed forever for Margaret when one of the boarders brought a young gentleman home for a homecooked meal. The young man was a banker, new to Dawson Creek, and it was love at first sight for Marg and Ken. They married in November 1959 and had 3 children, Donna, Karen and Mark.
Banking life saw the family move several times, mostly between Edmonton and Calgary, AB. Marg was a busy mom in those days. As well as raising her children, she worked in a few of Ken’s branches and also did secretarial work for a real estate company and a lawyer’s office. December 1975 saw the family take a huge leap of faith when they bought a Dairy Queen and moved to Kelowna, BC. Marg, being the hard worker she was, worked day and night in those early days to make the business a success.
In later years, Marg and Ken were able to travel throughout parts of Canada and the U.S. They enjoyed travelling with friends and even did a snowtrain trip through the Rockies. So many wonderful memories were made. Just as retirement plans were being made, Marg received a cancer diagnosis. The next few years were filled with major surgery and chemo. She was a fighter and won the battle over cancer. Shortly after her 5 year cancer free mark, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This journey was to be a long one, lasting 15 years. We are thankful she is now at peace and reunited with her husband, the love of her life, Ken.
Marg was predeceased by her father Lloyd West; mother Wilma West; husband Ken Bernath; and brother Alvin West. She is survived by daughters Donna Greer and Karen Bernath; son Mark Bernath (Deb Laslop); grandchildren Christine Greer, Andrew Greer (Jaclyn Schierholtz), Ryan Bernath (Lindsey Hovey), Tambry and Talia Bernath; as well as siblings Harry West, Louella Austgarden, Calvin West (Jane), and Brian West (Melanie).
The family would like to express their sincerest thanks to Sun Pointe Village, Ellison, and Belgo communities for their excellent care over the past eight and a half years.
There will be no formal service as per Marg’s wishes. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

This family adopted us some 36 years ago, when we moved here. Auntie Margie was like our second mom, and we’ve been so blessed to be included in countless celebrations and special occasions, with the Bernath family. Margie was one of the most special angels on this earth, touching so many lives and making such a loving difference in everything she did. Donna, Karen, Mark and family, we share in your sorrow. RIP dear Auntie Margie, Doreen & Gerry
