We Remember

BOULTON, Joan
August 18, 1931 — November 7, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Boulton on November 7, 2023, at 92 years of age.
Joan is survived by her children; Nigel (Kim) and Jill; grandchildren Matt (Courtney), Regan (Marlo), Chris (Janine), and Erin (Eric); and great-grandchildren Hudson and Ella. She was recently predeceased by John, her beloved husband of 69 years, as well as by her parents Hannah and Sam, and her dear son-in-law Bob.
Joan was born in Yorkshire England and met John in 1942 at Grammar School. They married in 1954. Joan was an early years teacher and taught in London while John was finishing his Ph.D. and in Culceth, Cheshire until starting their family in 1957. The family emigrated to Canada in February 1964 and settled in Pinawa, Manitoba where John was recruited to work at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment. They quickly realized that winter in Canada was very different than in England, but eventually acclimatized and raised their children in Pinawa before moving to Ontario in 1981. Joan taught for many years in Pinawa and subsequently worked as a librarian in both Pinawa and Mississauga Ontario. After retirement, they lived in London (Ontario) and Calgary until settlling in Kelowna in 2015.
Joan had a beautiful Soprano voice and sang in many church choirs; she even tried her hand at acting in some community theatre productions in Manitoba. Joan was well known for her passion for knitting and knitted her trademark blankets which she donated to neonatal intensive care units across the country. She made up patterns as she went along and was proud of the fact that no two blankets were the same. Needless to say, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and family in England were all recipients of many sweaters, afghans, and blankets over the years.
The family would like to thank family physicians Susan Medynski and Majorie Docherty for their exceptional care of both Joan and John, dear friends Debbie and Ron Kushneryk, and the caring staff at Home Instead and the Vineyards Residence. We invite you to remember Joan in your own way. To honour Joan’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. If desired, donations in her name can be made to the KGH Foundation
