We Remember

CORTINA, Giorgio ‘George’

April 3, 1941 — July 19, 2025

It is with profound sadness that the family of Giorgio ‘George’ Cortina announces his passing on July 19, 2025, at the age of 84 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.  George courageously battled Parkinson’s for fourteen years, facing each day with resilience, until he could fight no more.

Born on April 3, 1941, in Ripi, Frosinone, Italy, George’s early years in the Italian countryside fostered a lifelong love of nature and a playful spirit that followed him throughout his life.  At seventeen, his adventurous nature led him to Paris, France and by his early twenties, he had moved to Montreal, QC.  Later, he spent time in Vancouver, BC before ultimately settling in Toronto, ON, where he built a successful painting business known for quality, reliability, and craftsmanship – all without ever needing to advertise.

In 1992, George met and married the love of his life, Amanda.  Their life together was built on a foundation of love, respect and unwavering trust.  In 2006, they made the bold move to West Kelowna, BC to be closer to their daughter and her family.  George fondly remembered driving across Canada twice in a rented U-Haul, proudly recounting the great time he made along the way.

George had a deep passion for gardening – more than just a pastime, it was a source of joy and purpose that filled his days with peace, not to mention providing family and friends with endless fruits and vegetables.

George is survived by his loving wife, Amanda; children, Emilia and Antonio; stepchildren, David (Jennifer) and Jennifer (Len); grandchildren, Olivia, Sophia, Alex, Sam, and Daniela; siblings Giovanni and Rita; and brother-in-law Ben (Paulette).  He will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.  George was predeceased by his parents, Emilia and Domenico; his siblings Rocco, Italo, and Luigi; brother-in-law Marcello; and sister-in-law, Anna – all of whom he remembered with affection.

George’s strength, humour, and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.  He leaves behind a legacy of determination, hard work and quiet joy.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Kelowna General Hospital, 4B Royal Building.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks you to consider a donation in George’s memory to Parkinson Canada.

Even though we’ve only knew Giorgio for 2 years as our next door neighbour we will truly miss him.
He was a man that that loving shared his garden with us and in the winter would come over and blow the snow off our sidewalks. We will miss his smiling face and being the good neighbour he was. He introduced us to that drink called grappa. Cheers to a loving man we will miss him dearly.
