We Remember

EICHHORST, Georg “George” Friedrich

October 20, 1958 — April 26, 2025

Our beloved, positive, and supportive Georg Eichhorst went to be with his Lord on April 26, 2025, at the age of 66.

Born in Birten, Germany, on October 20, 1958, Georg moved to Canada with his family when he was ten. After a few winters braving the cold in Edmonton, AB, the family found their forever home in Kelowna, BC, a place Georg came to love deeply.

Georg lived a life full of spirit, full of laughter. He had an embracing way of living – meeting struggle with openness and humour. He wore many hats (often literally): He could repair toasters and TV’s at the motel, cork wine bottles at Cedar Creek winery, prune the apple trees on the orchard, birth calves on the farm. Later, he found deep purpose working with special needs students, bringing patience and joy to those who needed it most.

In his younger years, some friends knew him as the “Italian Stallion” – a nickname that stuck not because of any Italian roots, but because of his strength, charm, and his way with people. He could talk to anyone and make them laugh, frequently with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. Even after being diagnosed with MS, Georg kept his humour intact. When double vision began to set in, he shrugged and joked, “That’s okay, it looks like I’ve got more money in my wallet”. He had such a positive outlook all throughout his struggles with MS – it may have slowed his steps, but never his spirit.

Georg had a deep love for sports. He was an exceptional football and soccer player in his day. And when he could no longer play, he stayed involved: coaching Melissa’s soccer team and manning the score-keeping table for Steven’s hockey games. It still makes us laugh, the folks at Kelowna Minor Hockey even made him a jersey that said “Buzzer” on the back – because when Steven scored a goal, he would lay on the buzzer a little longer than he did for everyone else! For over 30 years, Georg and Debbie faithfully attended the Western Conference Basketball Tournament, cheering from the sidelines. They were also regulars at nearly every Okanagan Sun home game.

For Georg, family time was quality time, it was what life was about. They cherished camping trips together as well as Florida vacations – always with at least one theme park squeezed in. Above all else, Georg loved his family.

Georg leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years, Debbie; his son Steven (Marie) and grandsons Logan and Mason; his daughter Mellisa (Mike) Weiss and grandchildren Ayah and Ari. He is also lovingly remembered by his mother Anna and his sister Angel (CJ) Maher. He is now reunited in Heaven with his father, Arnold, and his brother, Siggy.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Koss, the Mountainview care team, especially Joan, and the wonderful Hospice staff for their loving care of Georg.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 5, 2025, at 11:00 am (PST), in the chapel at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. If you are unable to attend in person, please join the family online by Livestream at the time of the service (see below), a recording will be made available to view shortly thereafter.

Georg was very active in his church. He taught Sunday school and was an Awana leader. He had a passion for helping with children, which led him to going back to school and getting his Special Needs Assistant teacher with the Vernon School District. Melissa will be continuing the tradition on by going on the MS walk this month, so any donations can be made to the MS Society.
