We Remember
FINNIE, James “Jim” Brennen
August 12, 1935 — November 10, 2025
It is with great love and sadness that the family of Jim Finnie announces the loss of their beloved husband, dad, grandpa, and friend, who passed away November 10, 2025 in Kelowna, BC after 90 wonderful years.
Dad was born August 12, 1935 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to William “Bill” and Bertha Finnie. He grew up in Saskatoon as the middle child between his brother Grant and sister Patricia. While in high school, he met the love of his life, Margaret Rose Hathway. They were married August 31, 1957, and began to build their life together, welcoming daughter Susan in 1963 and son Glen in 1965.
Dad is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret; sister-in-law Shirley Hathway; daughter Susan (Murray) Weeks; son Glen (Sarah) Finnie; 5 grandchildren, Ashley (Nathan), Samantha (Paul), Ryan (Ashley), Taylor (Kimberley), and Kayla (Brady); and 7 Great Grandchildren, Jacob, Evie, Nash, Tate, Parker, Rae, and Grace.
As a boy, dad always enjoyed sports, playing baseball, hockey, and curling. He also became an avid golfer.
Dad started his working career in the tire industry with Goodyear in Saskatoon in 1953. As Dad progressed it took our Family to Winnipeg, Vancouver, Saskatoon, and Edmonton. In 1977, after 24 years with Goodyear, Dad joined Kal Tire. Mum and Dad eventually moved their family to Kelowna, where Dad began his career working with Kal Tire from the store at the corner of Ellis and Doyle.
With his infectious smile and sense of humour, he soon made many new friends. Still a lover of all sports, dad became a member of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club and the Kelowna Curling Club. He was active in the community and supported the sports his children were involved in by coaching and umpiring many hockey and baseball games. He was also the President of Westside Minor Hockey as well as the President of Westside Minor Baseball. As his family grew, dad was not one to miss a baseball game, dance recital, hockey game, football game or any other activity his grandchildren or great-grandchildren were involved in. He shared many golf games with so many members of the family. He truly did love spending time with his family!
Dad enjoyed several golf trips and Hawaiian vacations with Mum and friends. Mum and Dad were also able to travel together around the UK.
He had 25+ years after retirement to spend time with his family and enjoy his favourite activities – golf and wood turning.
Mum and Dad were together for over 70 years, and looked after and loved each other daily. Their love for each other is a testament to what “true love” really is. If we all could be so lucky….
A couple of years ago, Dad began his struggle with dementia. As a family, we gained the strength to love and support him through this difficult time, and Mum was a resilient caregiver to dad. 5 months ago, it was a hard decision, but dad moved to the Belgo Community at Sun Pointe Village. Our family would like to thank everyone there for the love and care that they gave to him.
We all will miss dad dearly. There is comfort in knowing he is now at peace, and we all have our wonderful memories to cherish forever.
Did you ever know that you’re our hero?
And everything we would like to be
We can fly higher than an eagle
For you are the wind beneath our wings.
We will have a family Celebration of Life for Dad at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer Society of BC.
