We Remember
FINNIE, Margaret Rose
May 2, 1937 — February 16, 2026
Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Margaret Rose Finnie on February 16, 2026, at the age of 88. Mum passed away peacefully with her family by her side.
Mum was born May 2,1937 in Delisle, Saskatchewan to Wilfred and Thelma Hathway. She grew up as the middle child between her brother Wilf and sister Shirley. Mum was very close to her siblings, especially her sister Shirley, as they lost their father Wilfred during the war in 1942. The family then resided in Saskatoon with their mother and grandparents. Thelma also passed away at a young age in 1959.
Mum was a quiet, shy, intelligent beauty who captured the heart of our dad. It was in high school in Saskatoon where she met the love of her life, James “Jim” Brennen Finnie. They were married on August 31,1957 and began to build their life together, welcoming daughter Susan in 1963 and son Glen in 1965.
As they raised their young family, Mum and Dad moved to Winnipeg, Vancouver, Saskatoon, and Edmonton before their final move to West Kelowna in 1977. They made many great friends along the way.
Mum was a very talented seamstress and could often be found at her sewing machine making clothes and other items for friends and family members. We were so lucky to always have the best homemade Halloween costumes!
She enjoyed reading and going to book club, however, her greatest love was her yard and gardens. Countless enjoyable hours were spent looking for plants at the local nurseries and coming home to plant them in her beautiful yard. She loved to putter around the yard and tend to her many beautiful flowers. She enjoyed being a member of the garden club and going to garden tour events.
Mum always welcomed her family into her home and was a very nurturing and caring Grandmother as our kids were growing up. She looked after them often, picking them up from school and taking them on shopping trips and other adventures. She truly did love to spend time with her family.
Pets were a welcome and much loved addition to our family home. Cherished dogs included Petie, Chip, Bear, and Jeannie. And cats, Marmalade and Marigold. Family was always encouraged to bring their dogs over for a visit, most recently, Toby, Mara, Suzy and Rocco. They always put a smile on Mum’s face.
Over the years, Mum and Dad enjoyed several golf trips and Hawaiian vacations with friends. Mum and Shirley travelled together to the UK and Mum and Dad were also able to enjoy a trip there together.
Mum and Dad were together for over 70 years. They looked after and loved each other daily. She was heartbroken when Dad passed away a few months ago in November 2025.
Mum is survived by her sister and best friend, Shirley Hathway; daughter Susan (Murray) Weeks; son Glen (Sarah) Finnie; 5 grandchildren, Ashley (Nathan), Samantha (Paul), Ryan (Ashley), Taylor (Kimberley), and Kayla (Brady); and 7 great grandchildren, Jacob, Evie, Nash, Tate, Parker, Rae, and Grace.
Mum moved to the Heritage in West Kelowna a few months ago. Our family would like to thank everyone there for welcoming and caring for her.
We are heartbroken over the loss of such a beautiful lady and will miss her dearly.
‘A heart that’s broke is a heart that’s been loved’
Our family will celebrate Mum’s life at a later date.
Donations in Mum’s memory can be made to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation.
