We Remember

HITZELBERGER, Anton “Tony”

May 28, 1930 — July 26, 2025

Tony Hitzelberger passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 95.

Predeceased by his beloved wife Herta, with whom he shared an extraordinary 73-year journey, Tony is survived by his son Anton (Anne), daughter Sabine, and grandchildren Sonia, Sean, Claire, and Lynne.

Born in Austria, Tony fought in World War II, returning home at just 14. He met Herta at 17, and together they built a life of resilience and devotion. The couple married young and immigrated to Canada at age 20 with their infant son, Anton. Eight years later, they welcomed their daughter, Sabine.

Trained as an engineer in Austria, Tony worked tirelessly to rebuild his career in Canada. While working as a dishwasher by day, he attended night school to relearn his profession and master English. His perseverance paid off, and he resumed his engineering career with pride.

Tony was a gifted handyman, always fixing or improving something around the house. He and Herta shared a love of walking, dogs, and spirited card games—though Tony was known for always winning. Even after more than seven decades together, he still held Herta’s hand.

Independent, strong-willed, and deeply devoted to family, Tony leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, love, and determination. He will be dearly missed.
