We Remember

HOLMBERG, Darcy Lane

April 28, 1967 — March 7, 2026

Darcy Holmberg, 58, passed away on March 7, 2026. His death was unexpected and the outpouring of love from friends and family has shown the legacy he leaves behind.

Darcy was born April 28, 1967, in Kelowna BC, to Dwight and Leona Holmberg. He was their second of four children and only son. He graduated from George Elliot Senior Secondary in 1985. He is remembered for playing french horn and bass guitar in various school bands and musical projects with his friends. He was also one of three air cadets in his year to get their pilot’s license, an accomplishment he was extremely proud of. He married his high school sweetheart, Julie Margetts, in August of 1987 and had two children together. Marissa was born in 1990 and David in 1992. Although they divorced, they stayed friends, and Darcy maintained a close relationship with his in-laws, and they all considered him family for the rest of his life.

While Darcy had wanted to get into aviation after graduation, he ended up spending his career working on the water instead of in the sky; either building or fixing boats for almost 40 years. First he built boats with Campion Marine, and then later worked with his father-in-law, Bruce at Margetts Fiberglass, fixing boats and other fiberglass projects that came in. He was a hard worker who wasn’t afraid to get dirty to get the job done. In fact he was pretty sure “getting dirty” was part of the job description.

He also lived in Calgary for a time, working at Marine Doctor for Greg Arich, who would also become a close friend. At that time Greg also got Darcy working for his company, Titan Productions, which did sound set up for country concerts at rodeos and stampedes in the area. This was a direction nobody would have expected as Darcy’s musical tastes were more firmly rooted in rock and roll or, if he knew the artist personally, jazz and blues. However it gave him the opportunity to meet many country artists, as well as Tom Jones at a wedding they helped with in Lake Louise, and to attend the Professional Bull Riding Competitions in Las Vegas.

Darcy will be remembered as the kind of man who lived on both ends of the spectrum. He was an introvert, but poured his love and time on all his friends, hosting shop parties and always showing up for special occasions. He was happy to chill with a cold beer and go fishing, but also raced Hit to Pass on weekends with his best friends. He raced with SNAFU racing and his brother-in-law Ken Margetts in the early 2000s, and then Double D racing with Dan Larson over the last few seasons.

His kids were his pride and joy, and he loved them more than anything. He was an awesome grandpa and talked about his grandkids constantly. Darcy came from a large family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a great friend, generous to a fault, and always willing to donate his time and energy to local charities and fundraisers. He may have been a self proclaimed “rebel without a clue”, but he loved deeply and was a deeply sentimental person and kept every card he received.

He is survived by his parents, Dwight and Leona Holmberg; three sisters, Lorelie Johnson, Sheila Sherwood, and Melanie Williams; children, Marissa Dutoff and David Holmberg; and grandchildren, Sam and Audrey Dutoff. He was an uncle to 8 nieces and nephews, and 4 great-nieces and nephews.
