We Remember
McSHANE, Margaret “Peggy” Ruth
February 24, 1943 — February 24, 2026
It is with immense love and sadness that we announce the loss of Margaret “Peggy” McShane, who passed away peacefully, while surrounded by family and loved ones, after a battle with cancer, at the age of 83.
Left to hold her dear to their hearts are her sisters Karen Stewart (Harry Tonn) and Mary-Ellen (Larry) Laidlaw; as well as Gord Meugens; Elizabeth McFarlane; many nieces & nephews, and other other loving family members, and friends.
She now goes to join her husband, Gary Edward McShane, who passed before her.
Peggy was born on February 24, 1943, and lived a life defined by generosity, courage, and an adventurous spirit. Feisty, fiercely independent, and deeply intelligent, she embraced the world with curiosity and compassion. A passionate traveller, she explored places near and far, including Italy, Germany, Mexico, and Taiwan, always returning home with stories, perspective, and a renewed appreciation for the people and cultures she encountered. Peggy devoted her professional life to education, first as a teacher and later as a principal, becoming the first female elementary school principal in the Burnaby school district. She was a true champion of learning and believed deeply in the power of education to shape lives and communities.
Beyond her career, Peggy’s heart for others showed in countless ways. She was a devoted supporter of the Humane Society, BC Children’s Hospital, and the BC SPCA, giving generously of her time and resources. She treasured her family and friends and was known for being a loyal, loving presence in their lives. She was also a huge supporter of the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society and built “Peggy’s Pond” for water fowl. Creative at heart, Peggy found joy in making jewelry and expressing herself through art.
Her warmth, strength, and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She will be missed beyond words and remembered always with deep love and gratitude.
Family and friends will each honour Peggy in their own way. No formal service will be held.
Memorial donations may be sent to the BC SPCA or the Okanagan Humane Society.
