We Remember

MURPHY, Patricia Angela
June 2, 1923 — May 1, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Pat on May 1, 2015 at the age of 91 years. Eternally youthful, well-versed and progressive in her thinking, our remarkable and selfless mother was deeply rooted in faith and family. Her elegance, humility, patience, and legendary hospitality served as a constant touchstone. On quiet afternoons, her children would sneak down to the water’s edge for candid advice that was meted out with great reserve and forethought but always before the 5pm cocktail hour! Pat was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick to William Boyle and Mary Riordon, as one of 11 children. She received a B. Sc. in the Art and Science of Nursing from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax and St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal in 1944. She went on to teach Nursing at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, where she met her cherished husband of 63 years Dr. Brian J. Murphy who predeceased her in 2010. Pat had since moved to Vancouver and died peacefully in her own home, surrounded by loving, supportive care. From Calgary to Kelowna to Palm Desert, she was rarely seen without her St. John’s wardrobe, signature manicures and classic lips by Chanel. Pat claimed that her job as a mother of 8+ was the most interesting occupation of all, and was helped in this endeavor by Carol Kirkwood a woman too beloved to be called a housekeeper. She leaves behind Jim (Nanaimo); Joe (Vancouver); Mary Ann (Kelowna); Mark (Carolyn) (Calgary); BJ (Tanya) (Toronto); Paul (Andrea) (Calgary) and Trisha (Ken Webster) (Kelowna and Vancouver). She also leaves behind godson Jim (Claire) Burns (Kelowna). She is survived by grandchildren Jaime, Lisa, Brian (Gina), Corrine, Ryan, Mike, Sean, Erin, Michael, Taryn, Christina, Josh, Jake, Jada, Spencer and Bridget Murphy, and Rachel and Tatum Webster. She is also survived by two great grand-children, Carter and Sophia Murphy. All spent many a favorite hour on grandma’s couch, with a race to see who got there first. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family for a bench in John Dupuis Park, Casa Loma, Kelowna in the name of Brian and Pat Murphy. A prayer and memorial service will be held at Springfield Funeral Home in Kelowna, BC, Friday, May 22, 2015 @ 7pm; a Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, May 23, 2015 @ 11am at St. Pius X Church in Kelowna, BC. Murphy Family
How blessed you were to have Pat as a Mother; and I too, as a friend! How sad!
Much love, Kae
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the extended Murphy family in the loss of your mother/grandmother. The Burns family goes back a long way with the Murphys in Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver. Mrs. Murphy is remembered and celebrated as a person who was kind and generous to all.
The last time that I remember seeing Pat and Brian was at my sister Patty’s house in White Rock after my brother Bill’s funeral service (September 2003). Dr. Murphy was entertaining everyone in his usual way. It was a great get-together for members of the two families, and brought back many memories for the now, much older children.
We have been blessed to know Pat and Brian and their family over the years.
We will remember Pat and Brian and their family in our prayers and request that they will remember their own family and the Burns family in their presence before God.
Bob and Darlene Burns
My deepest sympathy to the Murphy family. I will always remember ‘Mother Murphy’s’ keen sense of humour, lively chuckle and her cool demeanor in the face of total choas. Rest in peace Mrs. Murphy.
