We Remember
NIELSEN, Kenneth “Ken”
May 10, 1942 — November 17, 2025
It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the loss of Ken Nielsen, who passed away unexpectedly on November 17, 2025, in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 83.
He leaves behind a wealth of love, including his loving partner for many years, Darlene “Dar”; children Lana (Dan), Jen, Grant, and Keith (Michelle); 13 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren; as well as 1 brother, Gary Nielsen.
Ken, born on May 10, 1942 lived a life defined by talent and dedication. Ken made his mark on the field as a wide receiver for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1965-1970, showcasing the athleticism that remained a very large part of him throughout his life. He carried that love of sport into his later years as an avid runner and completed many marathons. His talents weren’t all athletic, as he successfully practiced Dentistry for many years. As the years passed, Ken took up golf and had many a game with his girl Dar.
He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to share in his remarkable journey.
A Private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Ken’s honour.

I was very fortunate to have Ken as my dentist at one point in my life. He was terrific and made sure that I had “ perfect “ teeth… of which I am most grateful…. And of course I was a great fan of his when he played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers!
He will be missed.
With sympathy and condolences to his family.
Susan A. Thompson
Mayor of Winnipeg 1992-1995; 1995-1998
Ken was a wonderful running companion and friend. We spent several years training together and much of it in the old Gritty Grotto or the Pan Am track. Seeing his photograph brought back many fond memories. Both Sachi and I send our condolences to the family and especially to Darlene and Grant and Keith.

Very sad to hear that we have lost Ken. Marvellous memories of our lunchtime runs and Manitoba and Twin Cities marathons. He was a special guy.
Condolences to Gary and family. Because of my close friendship with brother Gary and our love for all sports as kids growing up in S. Edmonton I had the opportunity to know Ken as the older brother that I idolized . From pickup hockey or baseball games to playing football in the freezing cold and snow, or hanging out at their house on occasion I feel like a small part of my boyhood memories are gone but not forgotten. Last time I spoke to Ken just before moving to Vancouver with family in 1957 he tolf me he would be playing for the Eskimos and me the Lions and we would clash on the field. I didn’t make it but so proud of him that he did as I knew he would even as a kid. I bet wherever he is right now probably tossing a football around same as I remember him always doing as a kid. and his dreaming of playing for the Eskimos some day.. His idols would have been Jackie Parker., Johnny Bright, Normy Kwong, . Rollie Miles etc Im sure.last time I saw him If I had to guess lol.
My condolences to Ken’s family. My late husband and Ken spent many a lunch hour running together and Ken was also our Dentist for many years. May the memories you have of your father be a blessing.
