We Remember

PAYNE, Bryan Arthur

November 29, 1945 — April 8, 2025

It is with great love and profound sadness that we announce the loss of Bryan Arthur Payne, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in the comfort of his home on April 8, 2025, at the age of 79.

Bryan leaves behind a wealth of love, including his partner of 15 years, Rose; daughters Angela (Jerry) McAlduff and Connie (Vince) Kuipers; step-daughter Glenda (Richard Horvath) McCulloch; grandchildren Tayler (Sawyer) Murdoch, Nathan McAlduff, Tamara (Aaron) McCulloch, Dani Horvath, and Jadyian Horvath; brothers Milton (Camie) Payne and Robert Payne; and his beloved dog, his fur bud, Budweiser. Bryan will also be greatly missed by all of his extended family members and friends. He now goes to join his wife, Maureen (d. 2009), and sister, Beatrice Damen.

Born in Calgary, Alberta, on November 29, 1945, to Arthur and Katherine Payne, Bryan came into the world with a smile and carried it with him throughout his life. A true original, Bryan lived with joy, generosity, and a deep appreciation for people.

He loved to travel, especially with his beloved wife Maureen, with whom he shared many memorable trips across the United States before her passing in 2009. In later years, he continued to enjoy travel alongside Rose, a close and caring companion.

Bryan wasn’t one for gambling, but he did enjoy the camaraderie of a good game—whether it was cards with friends or bingo at the local hall. More than the games themselves, it was the people and the laughter that drew him in. He had a remarkable gift for conversation and could make friends quickly anywhere, whether in his neighborhood or in a checkout line. His big personality, booming voice, and genuine warmth made everyone feel welcome.

A proud and hardworking pipefitter, Bryan contributed to major projects during his career and was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. But his greatest pride was his family. Outgoing and deeply generous, he made time for those he loved and brought joy wherever he went—often with a quick joke and that unmistakable voice.

He will be remembered for his larger-than-life presence, his faithful companionship with his beloved dog Bud, and the way he turned ordinary moments into lasting memories. Whether it was a quiet evening at home or a gathering of friends, Bryan had a way of making life more full.

Though he is no longer with us, his laughter, stories, and love continue to echo in the hearts of those he touched. His signature phrase—“Payne’s the name, and fun’s the game”—remains a fitting tribute to the life he lived and the joy he brought to so many.

A Graveside Service in honour of Bryan will be held on THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2025, at 12:00 PM, located at KELOWNA MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY, 1991 Bernard Avenue, Kelowna, BC, with Pastor Ross Odnokon officiating.
