We Remember

RACINE, Raymond Arthur
September 17, 1934 — March 14, 2025
Well, if ever there was a man who knew how to put in a full day’s work and still have a little left for the folks around him, it was Ray Racine. He left us on March 14, 2025, at 90 years old, in Kelowna, BC, at Mission Creek Landing. But if you’re thinking Ray’s resting now — well, you’d be wrong. He’s probably up there tinkering with something, keeping his hands busy like he always did.
Ray was born on September 17, 1934, and from the get-go, he knew the value of hard work. He didn’t much care for sitting around when there was something to be done. Whether it was building Adirondack chairs that could hold up through a hundred summers, or growing vegetables that tasted better than anything from a store, Ray was always working on something.
He spent most of his years in Edmonton, but life took him and his family, to Burnaby when their eldest, Louise, was just 4. When the time came to slow down — though Ray never really slowed down — Ray and his second wife, Joan, settled in Kelowna for retirement. And in between all that, he found time to haul a big camper down to Arizona, where the sun was hot, the days were long, and life was just a bit easier.
Ray was a man who liked to keep moving. Every summer while the kids were little, he’d load up the family and head to Lake Osoyoos for two weeks of swimming, water-skiing, laughter, and stories that would get better every time they were told. Later in life, he took up golf to pass the time and enjoy a beer or two with friends.
Ray’s life was filled with love and family. He leaves behind his children, Louise, David, Darrell (Ann Marie), May (Len), Julie (Garth), and Ryan — all carry a piece of his hardworking spirit; his five grandchildren, Erin, Cameron, Amanda (Dwayne), Kristin (Michael), and Tanis (Mike) — who will remember the twinkle in his eye when he told a good story; and his four great-grandchildren, Aria, Kaleb, Jayden, and Fern — who will grow up hearing tales of a man who never quit until the job was done; and his companion Darlene.
He is also survived by his sister Annette. He’s gone on to join his wife Joan, his parents Euclide and Irene, and his brothers Denis and Phil — no doubt catching up and swapping stories like they always did.
“A good life’s like a well-tended garden — takes a lot of work, but the harvest is worth it.” Ray’s harvest was bountiful.
