We Remember

ROYDELL, Joyce

1944 – 2025

Born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada
Resident of Kelowna, British Columbia

It is with great love and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce Roydell, who spent over 65 beautiful years as a resident of the Okanagan Valley. Joyce passed away peacefully in Kelowna, BC, leaving behind a lifetime filled with adventure, music, and laughter.

Joyce is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Mike Roydell; her beloved daughter, Michelle Appleton; and her cherished grandchildren, Ethan Appleton and Brody Rego. She will also be missed by her extended family, including her sister-in-law, Inez Niemeyer, and her nieces and nephews Petra, Chris, Russ, Heather, and Jody.

A spirited soul with a zest for life, Joyce was an avid world traveller who explored far more corners of the globe than most of us ever dream of. Whether scuba diving among coral reefs, snowshoeing through quiet forests, or hiking mountain trails, she embraced every opportunity for exploration. She faced life—and even sharks—with spirited energy, humour, and curiosity.

Joyce’s boundless energy was matched only by her passion for music. A lifelong vocalist, she filled her days singing everything from gospel to jazz in local choirs. Her love for performance and harmony was infectious, and her presence lit up any room, stage, or classroom she stepped into.

Although Joyce wasn’t known for her culinary finesse—her kitchen experiments were both infamous and endearing—she more than made up for it with her warmth, wit, and the sense of adventure she brought to every meal.

She found joy in the simple and the spectacular: building puzzles, playing bridge with friends, boating on the lake, or just taking long walks in nature. From waterskiing and tennis to being a cheerleader in her younger years, Joyce was a true lover of sport and movement.  She also loved her career as an elementary school teacher here in school district 23.

Of all the places she visited, her heart always returned to the natural beauty of the Okanagan and the peaceful waters where she could simply float and reflect.

Joyce lived fully, loved deeply, and laughed often. Her adventurous spirit, musical heart, and unshakeable sense of humour will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a local school’s music program in Joyce’s honour—a cause close to her heart!

A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 1:00 pm, at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC.
