We Remember

SCHOUTEN, Lesley Maxine (née Hinshaw)
February 18, 1950 — May 23, 2025
Lesley Maxine Schouten was born in Middlesex, England, to Arthur and Mary (née Girdler) Hinshaw. At age 75, in her Kelowan, BC home, she was reunited with her family in heaven on May 23, 2025.
She is survived by her children, Tracey (Graig) and Corrie; her grandchildren Gavin & Garrett and Sabrina & Zoe; her siblings, Linda Hinshaw and Ron Hinshaw; and by other family, dear friends, and of course her two budgies, whom she delighted in. Sadly, she was predeceased by her grandchildren Nicholas and Olivia.
Lesley had a natural gift for drawing people in—she was a true people magnet. Strangers were instantly charmed by her warm personality, children gravitated to her, and she adored babies, especially her grandchildren, always ready to spoil them—even if it meant spending her last dollar. She had a wonderful sense of humour and was known for her quick-witted comebacks that always made people smile or made her a new friend. Friends could always count on a few good belly laughs when you went for a visit or a long talk on the phone.
Lesley’s love for animals was a constant in her life; she kept them close to her heart and cherished their companionship just as they cherished hers.
She loved to walk, feel the ocean breeze on her face, and sit by the beach to watch her grandkids play in the lake. Lesley had a passion for music, especially the hits from the ‘70s and ‘80s, and she often shared her favourites on her Facebook page for all to enjoy. She dreamed of being a dancer, and now she can. In her later years, Lesley enjoyed watching sports—tennis and baseball were her favourites. A lifelong learner, she was an avid reader, with shelves full of books. Her curiosity led her to explore topics like Mount Everest, ancient Egypt, and high fashion runway trends.
Lesley’s home reflected her warm, vibrant spirit—pink and purple fluffy pillows lined her couches, flowers filled her vases, and the soft glow of candles lit up her apartment. The cheerful sounds of her beloved budgies were always in her ear. Lesley created a space that was both cozy and welcoming, a true haven for those she loved.
Her love and kindness will remain forever in our hearts, and her memory will continue to guide us. Though she may be gone, a candle will always glow for those she loved.
