We Remember

SCHROEDER, Claire & William “Bill”

Claire Louise Schroeder passed away peacefully October 14, 2025 in Kelowna, BC. She joined her beloved Bill (d. 2022) to play cards and have a glass of wine together.

Born in Hull, Québec, Claire was the eldest child of Émilienne and Leo, with five younger brothers: Richard (d. 2020), Jean-Louis, Gaëtan, Jacques (Lise) and Guy (Danielle). She began working for Bell Canada at the age of 16, earning herself a position as a switchboard operator. In 1972, she met Bill in Ottawa, and they quickly fell in love. Married in 1975, after several moves they settled in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Bill worked as a research scientist for the federal government for nearly 30 years, with Claire always by his side. In 1980, their daughter Melanie (Devon) was born.

Travel was a family passion. Whether for Bill’s conferences or for pleasure, the family travelled frequently. They spent a year living in Sweden (1987-1988) and travelled extensively throughout North America and Europe as a family.

After Bill’s retirement in 2004, the couple moved to Kelowna, BC. Bill joined Claire’s long-standing hobby of bowling, and they volunteered with community organizations. They enjoyed many card and board games with friends they met in Kelowna. Of course, they continued being avid travellers: exploring much of Canada, frequenting the river cruises of Europe and sunning it up on beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and Pacific.

One of their greatest joys was becoming grandparents. Australian-born Wesley and Emmett adored their Opa and Grand-maman. Claire and Bill made the journey down under on multiple occasions to travel and spend time with the boys. Until the end, Claire would smile every time she heard their voices saying, “Bonjour grand-maman!” or “À la prochaine!”

The family is grateful for the genuine care shown by so many health professionals and care staff along both Claire and Bill’s journeys.

Condolences

  • David Cappitt says:

Having first met Bill (Helmut) in Germany in the 1950s, it was a delight subsequently to meet Claire, and particularly to spend a few days with Bill, Claire and Melanie in Richmond Hill in the 1980s. . I also have happy memories of visits by Bill and Claire to England. My memory of Claire is of somebody who was always smiling and I say to Melanie: condolences on your loss; always remember her smiles and laughter. God bless you all. David

  • Tanya says:

I only met Claire a few years ago, but enjoyed her stories and saw how much she missed Bill. She was a classy, poised and intelligent lady. She was so well-cared for and loved by her family. My heart is with you all on your journey of grief.
