We Remember

SMILLIE, Alan

May 23, 1949 — February 24, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Alan Smillie on February 24, 2026, at the age of 76. Al lived a full, rich life.

Born on May 23, 1949, Al made the journey over from Scotland when he was just eight years old, bringing with him a spirit and sense of humour that never faded. He went on to attend Steveston High School, BCIT, and UBC; and if you knew Al, you know he kept those friendships for life. The man never lost touch with the people who mattered.

Al spent his entire working career at Crown Packaging (formerly Crown Zellerbach), starting in Richmond, BC and eventually making his way to Kelowna, BC, where he worked his way up from Supervisor to Manager. He showed up, did the job right, and earned every bit of respect along the way.

Outside of work, Al was all in! Whether it was hitting the slopes, casting a line, teeing off, paddling out in his beloved kayak “Selma”, hiking, swimming, hunting, or playing a hand of Bridge. He loved a good walk, and over the years he shared those walks with his faithful doggy companions Trina, Tigger, Tara, and Bloom.

He also had a well-known talent for lending a hand – electrically speaking and “otherwise” – which earned him the affectionate nickname “Al, Al, the toilet pal”. If you needed help, Al was your guy.

In retirement, Al embraced every moment: travelling, spending sunny-time down south, and building a whole new circle of friends along the way.

He appreciated the finer things in life: a great glass of wine, a good Scotch, and, always, his coffee.

Although Al and his wife Jacquie never had children of their own, he was a proud and dedicated Godfather to six very loved children, and was warmly known as “Uncle” by many more. He had a gift for making kids (and adults) feel special.

Al is survived by his beloved wife and partner of 46 years, Jacquie, and by many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Euphemia and Hugh Smillie, and his brother Ron Smillie.

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to the wonderful staff at Brandt’s Creek Mews for the exceptional care they provided to Al over the past 15 months. Your kindness meant the world to our family.

Al, you were one of a kind. We’ll miss your laugh, your helpfulness, and yes – your coffee.
