We Remember

SWABEY, Margaret Olive (née Stevens)
March 1, 1936 — May 8, 2025
Margaret Olive Swabey (née Stevens), known as “Nanny” to her family, peacefully passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born in Hamble, England, Margaret was the oldest of 7 who were raised during WW2. Usually over a coffee (not tea!), she liked to share many appreciative stories of how her parents made most of the little they had during the war. Margaret and her devoted husband, Ted Swabey (who predeceased her in 2015), immigrated to Canada on October 15, 1966. They eventually settled in Kelowna, where they raised two rowdy boys and a lovely daughter. Their home, with its spacious yard, became a hub for their kids, nieces, nephews & grandchildren who spent hours playing outside and teasing Nanny about her well-known fear of frogs.
During her years at The Bay, Margaret made many friendships that lasted long after retirement. Her dry British humour and ability to laugh at herself brought warmth and laughter to everyone around her. Known for her detailed cross stitch and knitting, she created beautiful, lasting keepsakes that will continue to be treasured by her family.
Margaret leaves behind a large family who are grateful for the life and laughter she brought into the world. She is survived by her children: Gary Swabey (Denise), John Swabey (Elizabeth), and Cathy Swabey (Lloyd); her grandchildren: Tianna Riemer (Luke), Kirbey Swabey, Shanaya Rhine (Brett), TaLeah Schroeder (Nick), Rachel Swabey, Michael Swabey (Sarah), Brooke Vandale, and Garrett Vandale; and her great-grandchildren: Danai, Kasey, Jada, and Teagan Riemer; Rowen and Sage Rhine; Margot Schroeder; and two more great-grandchildren on the way. Margaret was a proud sister to Pam Biggs (Ray), Malcolm Stevens (Barbara), Pat Rees (John), Chris Stevens (Lyn), Colin Stevens (Elaine), and Rose Heeney (Joe); and an aunt to many loved nieces and nephews.
Margaret’s home is remembered as being full of the joyful chaos of a large family. Her exasperated but affectionate cry of “TED!” still echoes fondly in the memories of those who knew them.

My sincere sympathy to the Swabey family. It was our privilege to have Ted and Margaret as our neighbours for a number of years. I cherish the memories of many good visits. Always with a few good laughs if Margaret was there. Blessings to you all.
Hi Gary and Family
Sorry for the loss of your mom.
She sounds like she was a very nice woman.
