This is the room where we meet with families for the initial arrangement consultation.

I feel pretty comfortable in saying that this is probably one of the more emotionally charged rooms within our building.

Families come here. They are stressed. They are anxious. There is a lot of fear. They’ve just been with their loved one sometimes for days, even weeks. I still remember, so clearly, even when I chatted with my aunt – making arrangements for my uncle – she was so distraught, she couldn’t even remember his birth date.

It reminds us, as Memorial Care Assistants, on what we are here to do. We are here to treat you like how we would want to be treated if you were a part of our family. We are here to educate, let you know what options are available, giving the control to you so you can make, hopefully, the right decisions.

This is not an easy time. The average arrangements that we have here can take up to two hours between obituary writing, and selecting days and times, vital statistics. The think the only thing I’ve experienced personally that makes it at all easier is when families have pre-arranged and pre-planned their services. That takes a lot of the stress out. It takes a lot of the memories that they have – to try to recall items – away from them, and it makes it a lot easier.
