We Remember

JOBST, Horst Ernst

—

1926 – 2026

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Horst Ernst Jobst on October 21, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100.

Horst was born in Leipzig, Germany, within the town of Merseburg. As a young man, he served during the Second World War and spent five years as a prisoner of war in Siberia.

In 1951, Horst immigrated to Canada, arriving in Quebec as a skilled carpenter and cabinetmaker. He spent the next six years working as a logger and tree topper in Ontario and Quebec before eventually settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

While living in Winnipeg, Horst married Charlotte Hamrak, and together they raised their four children, Susanne, Grant, Tracey, and James. The family later moved to Richmond, British Columbia, where Horst continued his career in the floor-covering industry, a trade he worked in for 38 years.

In 1991, Horst and Charlotte retired to the Okanagan. Throughout his life, Horst was also an accomplished artist, working with pastels, ink, watercolour, and mixed media. He and Charlotte shared a love of travel and enjoyed exploring many parts of the world together.

Horst was predeceased by his beloved wife, Charlotte, in 2021. He leaves behind his four children and his cherished grandchildren, who will carry forward the memories, stories, and legacy of a life well lived.

Horst lived through a century of remarkable change, from his early years in Germany and the hardships of war to building a new life and raising a family in Canada. His 100 years were filled with hard work, family, creativity, and adventure.

He will be fondly remembered by his family and all who knew him.

James wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff on the 2nd floor at Mission Creek Landing retirement home, as well as Michelle at the first floor front desk. Their kindness, compassion, professionalism, and thoughtful care for the last 3 years of Dad’s life meant so much.
