We Remember

AIRTH, Miles Gabriel

July 11, 2013 — November 30, 2013

Many people will remember hearing about Miles Gabriel Airth. He was born to his parents, Samantha and Kelly, on July 11, 2013 at BC Children’s Hospital. Miles faced a life full of hurtles from his first breath. Born with a rare and complex congenital heart disease, which the family knew about before his birth, Miles was scheduled to have a series of open heart surgeries beginning in his first week of life to correct the condition. Once the doctors had more accurate scans of Miles heart however, it was realized his only option for survival was a heart transplant.

Miles went through a number of procedures, and was placed on medication to give him as much time as possible to wait for a heart. The family spent 4 and half months with Miles at Children’s hospital going through daily tests, scans and checkups, all the while hoping that the phone would ring, to say a heart was on its way. Along the way there were lots of smiles, and some great accomplishments including the creation of a paediatric cardiac transplant program at BC Children’s Hospital. Before the creation of the program children like Miles would have to travel to Edmonton or Toronto to receive a transplant. Miles played a part in seeing the program come to fruition. In the end though, Miles didn’t get to receive the miracle that would save his life. On Saturday November 30th at 1:15pm his journey on this Earth ended. Miles’ life was covered in love. He was loved by his family, by friends and often by complete strangers. He was loved by his nurses and his doctors. And he loved back. Miles taught us more in 4 and a half months than we could have learned in a lifetime without him. His Mom and Dad, as well as his big brother Noah live on to make sure his memory lasts, and to make sure kids like him have the very best chance.

  • Michelle and Jadyn Carle says:

Jadyn and I graduated with Kelly and although I didn’t know you guys personally I followed your blog on facebook, finding myself constantly checking in to see if your beautiful little man finally received his new heart. Our daughter Gemma was born a month after Miles and spent time in NICU for being low birth weight and I thought it was so terrible until I saw what you guys were going through. You were so strong and so brave as well as little Miles, Im not sure If I could ever be as strong as you. Your sweet baby was loved by so many including complete strangers such as myself. His life was short but he fought so bravely and always with a smile on his face. His story is known by so many he will never ever be forgotten and will be missed by so many. He is home now and at peace. Im so sorry for your loss and I hope you two can find peace in this devastating time.

  • Rick says:

  • Joy says:

I am tied to you simply through your son.

My second daughter was born in May. Each day I read your updates I could see our family in yours, knowing that but by the grace of God, your story could be ours.

Miles helped me to love more. I never knew I could love a wee little stranger. He taught me to even love my girls more. He taught me to smile through the trials.

Thank you for sharing your little man with us so openly in the short time you could. You didn’t have to, but I am completely grateful to have learned so much from your graciousness.
