We Remember

ALEX, Erna (née Neher)

April 15, 1924 — November 25, 2024

Always meticulously well groomed and fashionable, with clothes she often tailored herself, Erna had a full and fruitful life, shared with a large extended family and many friends. At the grand age of 100, Erna Alex passed away on November 25, 2024, in Village at Mill Creek in Kelowna, BC. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter G. Alex in 2007 . She also goes to join her parents; brothers Ernie, George, Bill, John, and Ozzie; her sisters, Liz and Ann; and her brother-in-law Jack Alex.  Those who remain to carry her memory include her brother Alvin (Duke) Neher; her sister-in-law Gwen Alex; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces & nephews, as well as great-great-nieces & nephews.

Born on April 15, 1924, in Edenwald, SK to the late John & Emma (née Presser) Neher, Erna grew up in Markinch, SK area.  Erna worked for PFAFF Sewing Machine in Winnipeg, MB selling sewing machines and was proud of the sewing machine she was able to purchase for herself.  She continued to sew throughout her life. She also worked as a Decorating Consultant for Simpson Sears in both Regina, SK and Calgary, AB.

In 1969, she married Walt Alex, and together they tackled life and love. She supported and helped Walt with his business, Martinique Bridge Studio. In 1980, they moved to Kelowna, BC to take in the warmer weather and all that the area had to offer. They both enjoyed to travel, visiting destinations in Australia, Mexico, and Hawaii.  For over 25 years they travelled all over in their motorhome, they would travel to visit family and friends alike, all across Canada and the US.

Faith was a cornerstone of Erna’s life from a young age, and she often referred to herself as a ‘cradle-to-grave Lutheran’. Erna was a naturally organized and private individual.  She enjoyed attending the symphony, thoughtfully decorating her home, and finding that perfect fabric or outfit at the price she was willing to pay.  Erna was a gracious hostess, welcoming friends and family into her home.  Visits were always a highlight, as she appreciated genuine connection with those she cared about.

A Funeral Service, with Pastor Barbara Groote officiating, will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024, at 9:30 am, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church: 2091 Gordon Dr, Kelowna, BC.  If you are unable to attend in person, a recording will be made available to view in the days following. A graveside burial, to lay Erna to rest, will take place after the service at 11:00 AM, at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery: 1991 Bernard Ave, Kelowna, and a reception will be held following the graveside back at the church.
