We Remember

ANDERSON, William Duncan

October 21, 1925 — April 22, 2017

Surrounded by his loving family, William Duncan Anderson (Bill) passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the age of 91.  He had a full life that was very well lived.

Bill will be fondly remembered for his easy smile and hearty laugh, kindness to all, mischievous wit and sense of humor. His children benefitted greatly from his belief, support and encouragement in pursuing higher education, chasing dreams and doing their very best at whatever their chosen path was.

Bill was an avid golfer and was a member of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club for over forty years where he served on the Board of Directors and as Club President in 1993 and 1994. A member of the Rotary Club since 1961 and a Paul Harris Fellow, he lived the club motto – Service Above Self – every day and also was a member of the KGH Foundation Board of Directors.

Bill enjoyed the great outdoors and passed along his love of golf, camping, fishing and travel to his family. He was a voracious reader of history and biographies and each week rose bright and early on Sundays to watch CBS Sunday Morning for its philosophical and educational coverage of current events.

Born on October 21, 1925 – Trafalgar Day, in Middleton, Nova Scotia, Bill grew up in Shelburne, Bass River and Middleton. He served as a Sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Force and upon discharge, attended and graduated from Dalhousie University with a degree in Commerce.

A job with the Hudson Bay Company brought Bill west to Vernon, British Columbia in 1949 where he subsequently began his 35 year career with the Royal Bank of Canada. It was in Vernon that he met and married Alice Wowk on September 12, 1951. In his own words, marrying Alice was “the best move I’ve ever made.”

He was extremely proud of his family. Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice, daughters Peggy Henderson (Bruce), Barb Blewett (Fred), Pam Hoeschle, Gail Graham, and son Rob Anderson (Shellan). His nine grandchildren, Jacci Herring (Graeme), Melissa Oliver (Jarrod), Christine Henderson (Alan Stremel), Jamie Henderson, Katie Judd (Tyler), Todd Blewett (Ariana McKay), Amanda Hoeschle, Holly Anderson and Brooke Anderson and his five great-grandchildren Alex, Matthew, Peyton, Sydney and Ellie were a great source of joy to him.

“Dad” taught by example, setting forth an approach to living that included treating all with respect and compassion, fulfilling commitments, taking responsibility and sticking it out to completion. “Gpa” will be sadly missed at family gatherings, which were most often large, loud and fun. While he would comment on the noise, he was quite often the instigator and had said he would greatly miss those events.

Bill is predeceased by his parents, William and Elizabeth Anderson, sisters Jean Faulkner and Elizabeth Parker and his grandson Matthew Hoeschle.

A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held Saturday, June 10th from 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm at the Kelowna Golf & Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the “Kelowna Golf & Country Club Junior Scholarship and Development Fund “. 1297 Glenmore Drive Kelowna BC V1Y 4P4.

The Anderson family sincerely thanks the incredible staff at Kelowna General Hospital – 4W and 4E and the Pathways to Home staff at Cottonwoods for their skilled and compassionate care.

  • Gail Magrath says:

Our sincere condolences to Alice and the Anderson family on your loss. Bill will be missed by the entire community. I’ve always been thankful I had a chance to work with him and form a friendship with your whole family. I always considered him as a mentor as did many of the people who were fortunate enough to have him as a boss during his banking career, I’m sure. Bud and I always enjoyed our visits, whether at Rockets games or Rotary or Bank functions over the past years. We will miss that booming laugh and great sense of humour also. Gail and Bud Magrath
