We Remember

ARAMBASICH, Fabian Paul

Passed away peacefully at the Central Okanagan Hospice House on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at the age of 83.  Survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Violet; son George Arambasich (Natalie) of Kelowna; daughter Natalie Musa (Joe) of Calgary; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brother Ivo and sister Mary both of Croatia; son-in-law Ivan; as well as numerous loved nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by his daughter Lori.  In Croatia, Fabian was a motivated and disciplined individual, which was evident throughout his life, both for his family and his career.  As a young man, he aspired to be a medical doctor, at the same time training to become an Olympic rower.  This in turn, started his journey to build a better and free life, hence leading him to defect from his homeland, via hijacking a fishing boat to Italy at gun point.  From there, he came to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, MB, where he soon met and married his one true love, Violet and had his three loving children.  His main priority was his family, focusing on being a good provider and role model, constantly upgrading and improving Fabian obtained his Business Administration Degree from the university of Manitoba, while working full time.  Fabian was very proud of his Croatian heritage and echoed that throughout his life.  Some of his noted accomplishments included the conceptualization and implementation of various Croatian organizations and events and remained a corner stone of the community all his life.  Fabian’s successful career encompassed working at Swifts for 25 plus years and a General Manager and Director of Maple Leaf Mills for Western Canada until his retirement.  Fabian enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Star Lake, MB, where he enjoyed fishing and canoeing.  He always enjoyed good conversations with a nice glass of wine.  Prior to his retirement his dream with his wife was to move to Kelowna, BC.  In turn, Fabian being results orientated, made this happen.  They built their dream home on Shannon Lake Golf Course and golfed five days a week.  He enjoyed the best of the Okanagan and also the warm weather in various locations in the winters.  The family wishes to express their thanks to their relatives, friends, neighbours, the Croatian Community, the entire staff at the Hospice House and special thanks to Dr. Oyelese for his excellent care and compassion.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes, 2547 Hebert Road, West Kelowna, BC, with Father Wayne Pfliger as Celebrant.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association – Hospice House, 2035 Ethel Street, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 2Z6.  If you wish to send a condolence, post photos or share a memory, please scroll down the page to the area called “Share Your Condolences.”

  • Ed Hordienko says:

What is difficult to express is the profound loss of a kind, caring, humorous, intelligent and dynamic man. He had a lot to share and share he did, to this day I frequently recall the pleasant and happy times, of which I will always value and cherish. Dinners, birthdays, picnics and times spent at the lake, all so special, all so dear. Even though Uncle Fabian had a number of vehicles, it is when I see a blue and white 1959 Chevrolet that I especially think of him, picturing him with his elbow hanging out the window. Uncle Fabian as well as the entire family holds many pleasant memories for me. I was honoured to have him as my adopted Uncle. My deepest and sincere condolences to Chocha Valia, Tasha, George and the entire family. He lives in our hearts.

  • George Hordienko and family says:

Dear Tyocha Vala, Natasha and George,

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Uncle Fabian. He was a wonderful man who was respected and admired by our family.

The sharing of his time and being a part of our family has been carved into our memories. Mom and Dad were very proud of having your family as close friends. Sharing many family events and visits over the years has left me with so many pleasant memories. Uncle Fabian was always an interesting person to be with. It was comfortable to share his space. While growing up I recognized that he was a very respected man on many levels, through his work, church, friends and most of all by his family. There were numerous memories that come up when I think of Uncle Fabian. One special moment that I recall occurred at the cottage that our parents were building. I wanted to build a fireplace as a contribution to the project. However, never having built one I had no clue as to where and how to begin. But as it happened Uncle Fabian dropped by and led me through the first steps to getting this job done. While setting out the stones and mixing the mortar we would talk about things and I realized even more so of what a special friend he was to our family. When he left to return home, he had instilled in me a degree of confidence that allowed me to finish the fireplace. I realized then that he had a lot more ability and skills than just putting up a fireplace. Over the years his depth and insight into various topics was really appreciated by me.

I fondly remember that he would tell stories about his adventures in Croatia from when he was young. Those anecdotes were fascinating. Stories from his later life made it very clear to me that he was very proud of his precious family.

Uncle Fabian’s passing was a great loss. May you find peace in remembering what an amazing person he was. I recall him with great fondness and was very glad to have the privelege of knowing him.

    Love,

    George Hordienko and family
