ASHCROFT, Glenn Arnold

February 4, 1921 — October 13, 2017

Glenn Arnold Ashcroft, 96, passed away quietly on October 13, 2017 at Brookhaven Care Facility in West Kelowna, B.C.

He leaves behind his son, Chuck (Effie-Jane); his daughter Leona, along with four grandchildren: Alan (Hsiu-Chen), Bonnie, Christopher (Veronika) and Courtenay; four great grandchildren: Eve, Mathieu, Angus and Jamie.   He was predeceased by his wife, Elsie, who passed away in January 2002.

Born and raised in Luseland, Saskatchewan, the son of Frances and Curtis Ashcraft, Glenn was the second youngest of nine children who eventually settled in the Kettle Valley and then Penticton.  When he was stationed in Saskatoon, he met Elsie and they married in 1945 and they enjoyed a long life together in Penticton, Cranbrook and then Kelowna where they retired.

Glenn spent his career working as a trainman and a conductor with CP Rail.  He always had a love of trains and had many stories recounting his adventures which he shared with anyone who would listen.  He also had a great love of the outdoors – he hunted, fished and camped and these were undoubtedly the happiest times of his life.  He also enjoyed music – he was a wonderful singer and in his younger years, he and Elsie formed their own square dance club and he called the dances.  In later years he enjoyed playing the guitar, harmonica and singing all kinds of western songs at small concerts, on his own or with family.

He was a strong, passionate man who loved and was very proud of his family.  He was self-taught and extremely bright – not too much could ever get past him.  He prided himself on his ability to make breakfast for his family – he was a poached egg master with not a dull knife in the house.   He was also an avid fan of the Blue Jays and he could be seen riding on his scooter with the Jay’s pennant blowing in the breeze.

Glenn’s ashes will be placed alongside his beloved wife at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery.
