We Remember
BABCOCK, John Lawrence “Larry”
September 5, 1934 — July 28, 2025
John Lawrence Babcock, known as Larry, passed away at the age of 90 on July 28, 2025.
Beloved son of Robert and Florence Babcock, North Bay, ON (predeceased), Larry was also the brother of Dennis Babcock, Sudbury, ON (predeceased) and loving uncle to Susan (Imre) Horvath, Nairn Centre, ON and Shelly Babcock, London, ON.
Larry was the beloved brother-in-law of Phyllis d’Entremont, Vancouver, BC; Vic (Olive, predeceased) d’Entremont, Moncton, NB; and Paul (Jean) d’Entremont, Halifax, NS (predeceased). Larry was also a loving uncle to Lisa d’Entremont, Moncton, NB; Andrea (Randy) Clarke, Miramichi, NB; Neil (Colleen) d’Entremont, Quispamsis, NB; Marc (Petra) d’Entremont, Oak Bay, BC; Colette (Thane) Jensen of Okotoks, AB; and Michelle (Marc) d’Entremont of Rossland, BC.
Larry was born in Timmons, ON and raised in North Bay, ON. As a young man, he was a member of the sea cadets, leading to a stellar career in the Canadian Navy. He was a very talented artist, once thinking animation would become his career of choice, but an impulsive visit to a recruitment office for the Navy led to his true calling. Larry had many interesting postings during his near 30-year tour and had received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977) – awarded to recipients in recognition of their worthy and devoted service, and reflected the esteem in which they were held by their associates.
In 1957, while based in Halifax, NS, the stars aligned and he met the love of his life, Evie d’Entremont – who became his life-long partner. Their lives were filled with love, joy, and travel. They spent the majority of their lives in Ottawa, ON before retiring and spending their golden years in Kelowna, BC.
He and his family were grateful for the loving care he received from the Vineyards Residence and DNA’s Helping Hands Companion Care. Larry was a truly wonderful man who will be missed by those he loved and who loved him.

I will miss Larry very much.. I work at Starbucks where he often visits and I always love talking to him and his my grandpa Larry and I will miss all his hugs.. Rest in peace ..heaven just gained an angel ..
Larry and I became good friends very quickly during a trip to Spain. When my wife and I met Larry and Evie, we just clicked.
He and Evie were an active, elegant couple, who epitomized, to me, how I wanted to age. He seemed utterly fulfilled and positive about everything, rare qualities. He was a kind man and I’ll miss our email exchanges.

I always looked forward to my Registered Massage Therapy appointments with Larry. I am privileged to have witnessed his life changes from being the primary care giver for his wife, his brokenness upon losing her, to embracing his move to the Vineyards. He always found a thread of hope and positivity to lead him forward. I loved that about him. He will be missed. Thank you, Larry, for touching my life.
I treasured my time with Uncle Larry especially those annual ski vacations to Saddleback Mountain, Maine as a kid. I loved his beard, his tattoo and his unconditional love and support.
I was so sad to hear of Larry’s passing but know he is happily reunited with his beloved Evie. I only met Evie and Larry in the early 2000s but they quicky became very special to me, The kindest, most loving couple it was my great pleasure to know. Will remember them with great love. The attached photo was taken on a visit by them to Parkers Cove, Nova Scotia.
Uncle Larry was certainly one of a kind. I will cherish the many memories that he gave me. The Christmas family vacations, the family get togethers in Halifax, the Naval ship tour when he was stationed in Halifax, the trip to Ottawa and our trip to Kelowna in 2019 (and all his navy stories)… to name a few. Larry’s love for life was contagious. There was a never ending list of stories filled with laughter. After reading the obituary, especially the part of animation artist, I had to share this picture he drew for my dad (Vic) after dad was stationed to Calgary. Larry was very talented indeed. Thanks for being you, Larry and filling our lives with joy and happiness.

I got the pleasure of taking care of Larry at the Vineyards Residence full time and every time I got to see him he always left a smile on my face and appreciated everything that was done for him. I am beyond sad hearing of his passing but happy he is at peace. He will always be remembered here and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family through this difficult time. We lost a wonderful human on this earth. Hugs to all and thinking of you.
I met Evie and Larry when I went to Halifax in 1962. We became best friends and remained so even after they moved to the west coast.. He was one of a kind. I had a great conversation with him a few weeks ago. He was loved by all who knew him. Rest in peace, my friend.
I had the pleasure of getting to know Larry shortly after he moved into the Vineyards Residence. Larry was a man of integrity, showing kindness and respect to every person he encountered. We had so many adventures, enjoying long car rides/lunches/coffees as he reminisced about his younger years. His favourite story was telling me how he picked up that phone call that ultimately led him to meeting Evie (and how all the boys were invited to the dance, but he made sure it was just him and his buddy that were aware of it), playing sports (especially volleyball) and his days in the military. I will miss his chuckle, followed by the comment, “You think?” A noble man with the biggest heart! Thank you to Michelle and Phyllis for entrusting Larry to my care. The world lost a good one – I’ll miss you Larry!
