We Remember

BAIGENT, Peter

November 7, 1939 — March 10, 2024

Peter Baigent peacefully passed away with family by his side at Spring Valley Care Home in Kelowna, March 10, 2024, at the age of 84.

Peter was born November 7, 1939, in Toronto, Ontario to Murray and Suzanne (née Barre). He leaves behind his beloved wife Marie (née Saumure/Winterwerb); children Brad, David (Lorna), Susan Sandwell (Dan), Michael (Michele), stepson Mark Winterwerb (Penny); eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; as well as his brother Murray. Peter is predeceased by his parents; brothers John and Phillip; and stepson David Winterwerb.

Peter and family moved to British Columbia 52 years ago, lived in greater Vancouver, then acquired a family ranch west of Prince George, and had the first custom feedlot in the B.C. interior. He later returned to the Lower Mainland and became the Insurance Agent for the Knights of Columbus. He met his wife Marie and married in 1986. Peter and Marie started Balanced Financial Services Ltd. as independent brokers in their home on West 37th in Vancouver, and expanded to an office on West 41st, practicing from 1986 to 1995 in Kerrisdale. Both Peter and Marie were Registered Financial Planners, CLU, CHFC. After selling the business, they travelled for a year in an RV. They spent the first two months in Kelowna, joined the Newcomers group and fell in love with Kelowna. They decided when the year’s RV trip was finished; they would settle in Kelowna, where they enjoyed the past 29 years.

Peter was always an entrepreneur. He ran and sold a general insurance agency in Toronto prior to moving to BC. After retiring at age 56, he continued having clients under his company Money Minders. He developed software for financial planners featuring Excel spreadsheets used in their practices. It kept him busy as he had to update the tax rates for each country that wanted the software.

Peter was a Queen’s scout, a cub leader, scout leader and venturer leader. He loved the outdoors, including fishing, hunting, hiking, and bird watching, especially when he could do these activities with family and friends.

Peter and Marie purchased a house in Palm Desert, California where they wintered for 10 years, and loved leaving (and coming back to) Kelowna in sandals. They loved travelling, including various places in Mexico with the RV, honeymooning in Italy, cruising rivers in Europe, an Alaskan cruise, the Panama Canal, China, Bali/Singapore/Dubai, England, Greece/Turkey and Egypt. Other destinations included Paris/Geneva, Florence/Venice, New York, and a two-month trip to Ethiopia/South Africa/Tanzania/Zanzibar.

A Memorial will be held on SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 2024 AT 1:30. PM, located at THE BALMORAL CLUBHOUSE in Kelowna. Condolences

  • Genevieve Dufresne says:

It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of my uncle Peter Baigent. We had little personal contact as I’m part of the Quebec branch of the family, but I have fond memories of the warm welcome Peter and Marie gave me when I went to Kelowna a few years ago following the death of my uncle John, Peter’s brother.
My mother Monique was the sister of Suzanne Baigent, Peter’s mother, and so we have always been proud to be part of the great Baigent family. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends, especially to his wife Marie, his brother Murray and his son David. I send you my prayers and hope that you will live with this loss as serenely as possible.

    Yours sincerely,

    Geneviève Dufresne
